Proposal

toilets:wheelchair=yes

The location has one or more toilets which is accessible for wheelchair users.

toilets:wheelchair=no

The location does not have a toilet which is accessible for wheelchair users. If the tag toilets:wheelchair is missing, the accessibility is considered unknown (no need to tag as unknown).

Rationale

More than 300.000 nodes where tagged whit wheelchair=yes/no/limited until now which shows that the topic is very relevant to the project. However, the accessibility status of toilets within these locations remain confusing (eg. the OSM-based project wheelmap.org gets many emails from users who just need to find the next accessible toilet and can not find it with the existing OSM information. Therefore, the wheelchair accessibility of the toilet of a location should be mapped as a separate tag to avoid confusion.

After running http://wheelmap.org for more than 2 years with lots of feedback from the users, we came to the conclusion that this tag is very important. Today, tagging a restaurant as wheelchair=yes implies besides the obvious accessibility parameters that a "toilet (if any) is accessible and cabin is wide enough to fit a wheelchair next to the toilet". Users get confused with the "if any" term, because this depends on the country and society of the users. In some countries there are toilets in every postoffice, in others not. We propose to use the wheelchair tag to say if a place can be entered with a wheelchair as it is agreed: entry stepless, rooms stepless. And the toilets:wheelchair tag defines if a wheelchair accessible toilet is present (or not) and can be accessed with a wheelchair.

Examples

Worldwide, all public locations such as restaurants, libraries but also shops could have accessible toilets. In some countries this is enforced by law, but not always implemented. Also, people travelling need this information.

Applies to

"toilets:wheelchair" should be used as a tag for nodes and areas (eg. buildings). Usually in combination with amenity types such as "amenity=restaurant".

Rendering

  • Wheelmap.org would like to display this information as nodes on a map (not rendered).
  • Rollstuhlkarte displays the information in the popup for the layers 'Geschäfte' and 'Freizeit', e.g. cinema abaton.

Existing Tagging

What keys/tags and Wiki pages might this proposal affect if approved? The implicit meaning that locations with wheelchair=yes have a toilet should be changed: It should be stated that toilets at the location must be mapped separately.

  • I neither approve nor oppose this proposal. --t-i (talk) 19:17, 2 July 2013 (UTC) I would still prefere wheelchair:toilets as it's used more often (445:42) and fits better to the intended use (combined with wheelchair and other wheelchair:*)

  • I approve this proposal I approve this proposal. Although I do not understand why only *=yes/no is proposed, and not also the actual number (1,2,3…), like for capacity:disabled. --JB (talk) 16:00, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
