Proposal talk:Beauty
what becomes of shop=hairdresser and shop=massage?
What exactly is the difference between a shop=beauty + beauty=hairdresser and a shop=hairdresser? Do we need both? And what about beauty=massage, which raises the same question. Nadjita (talk) 13:32, 9 September 2025 (UTC)
- It's to be used when a beauty shop offers hairdresser or massage services, along with other services. If a place is not a beauty shop and provides only hairdresser or massage services, you should use
shop=hairdresserorshop=massage. Ookvriflr1 (talk) 18:20, 9 September 2025 (UTC)- This is doubts the proposed deprecation of
leisure=tanning_salon. Maybe we shouldn't deprecate it by this logic? Ookvriflr1 (talk) 18:28, 9 September 2025 (UTC)- Removed the deprecation. Ookvriflr1 (talk)
- This is doubts the proposed deprecation of
spa and massage are not strictly beauty
I've never been to either, but as I understand them spas may offer beauty treatments but that isn't necessarily the point. It seems that relaxation is the primary goal, so I would say spas should remain something else and whatever beauty treatments a particular spa offers should be tagged as services available.
Massages, as far as I know, have no beauty application. A treatment where one gets some kind of concoction rubbed onto their face would not be a face massage but some other beauty treatment that just happens to resemble a massage. - JMGonk (talk) 12:17, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
Drop 'leisure=tanning_salon' too
I noticed that a 'tanning salon' only offering tanning services is, according to this proposal, still tagged with leisure=tanning_salon. However, in practice, this tag has had its peak and is in decline due to iD supporting shop=beauty+beauty=tanning instead of leisure=tanning_salon. Furthermore, the former has >5K entries, while the latter only has 1.5K. In other words, drop the line in the proposal stating "If a POI offers only massage or tanning, use shop=massage or leisure=tanning_salon.". (BTW: thank you for taking your time to document and officialize this better) --Pietervdvn (talk) 13:57, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
- I think this warrants a separate proposal. The current proposal is a step in the right direction. --501ghost (talk) 14:32, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with 501ghost. Ookvriflr1 (talk)
Add attributes
Interesting proposal. I would like to suggest adding additional categories of beauty salons. Also, in my opinion, the new scheme should move attributes from other categories, such as shop=*.
Barbershop
Barochamber
Body painting
Hair salon
Collagen therapy
Cosmetologist
Cryosauna
Fish pedicure
Floating
Hair removal / Epilation
Image consultant
Infrared sauna
Makeup artist
Medical cosmetology
Nail studio
Permanent makeup
Piercing service
Salt room
Taping service
Tanning studio
Tattoo studio
Toning salon
Wig and hairpiece
- Out-of-scope, more specific tags shall be added in another proposal, for example:
beauty:namespace. Ookvriflr1 (talk)
Rational & gender of clientele
WeeklyOSM reported this proposal as "indicate a hair salon’s specialisation in women, men, or mixed clientele" but that does not seem to be covered at all.
The rational of this proposal feels very weak and all the combinations (and existing data) not thought out. What existing tools/renderers will be affected, and how quickly will they catch up?

- "As a non-binding documentation change, the outcome of a proposal vote does not compel a change in tools which use and generate OSM data, such as the standard tile layer renderings or editor presets. An approved proposal will not be automatically rendered or added to presets; this is at the discretion of the developers and maintainers of those tools." Ookvriflr1 (talk)
