Proposal
This intended to mark the location of art galleries:
Art galleries are a popular visitor attraction, both for tourists and locals. Marking them on a map would be a useful addition. The tag should be used for any kind of gallery open to the public (either free or for a charge), be it a traditional art gallery, contemporary art, or photography (or a mix).
What this isn't for:
- tourism=museum already covers museums that happen to include some art works in their collections
- shop=art already covers private galleries and shops that exist to sell art works

- I oppose this proposal. I think this is pointless, as there are already shop=art for galleries and tourism=museum for galleries which do not sell. Create a subtag for museums (e.g. museum:theme=art_gallery) if you want to tell that it is explicitly for art work. I also don't agree that those are "for tourists". Given all that, "gallery" is not clear at all, and tourism doesn't help either to define that it is an "art gallery" -- Dieterdreist 09:41, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

- No, it is best practise to explain why you vote for no (it is also expected). Please do not remove the comments! -- Dieterdreist 11:14, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
- I oppose this proposal. I like the concept, but this tagging is bad. I agree with Dieterdreist.--Surly 17:36, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

- I oppose this proposal. See my comment in the discussion page. I'd prefer a top-level museum= tag. Sean Horgan 15:32, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. -- Having proposed a sophisticated set of tags myself, I can fully follow Harry Wood's reasoning here: "it's a shame we [...] still don't have a nice simple art gallery tag!". Kay D 19:56, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

- I approve this proposal. -- Phiwa 00:44, 04 November 2011 shop=art is a gallery that wants to sell pieces of art or arts and crafts but tourism=gallery is a gallery that organises vernissage, finissage and other events related to art... so it should be in the category tourism or as proposed in a new feature "culture".
- I approve this proposal. It is common where I live to have an art gallery that hosts collections by local artists (some for sale, some not), as well as community art related activities. I feel that calling this a shop or type of museum are not good descriptors for this type of venue. --Keypunch 23:51, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
