Proposal

This is a proposal for tagging storage tank Wikipedia. A tank is a storage container for undifferentiated content. The most commonly noticed forms are fuel tanks in refineries or silos around farms.

Rationale

Being mostly tall and visible structures, storage tanks are frequent landmarks. The following features partially describe the concept: gasometer which is specific for gas storage, water_tower which is specific for drinking water storage and silo which is specific for bulk material storage. all of them are too specific to map unknown content, fuel, or other liquids.

man_made=storage_tank used with content=* tag creates a simple feature that would enable to map all the above features and clears confusion when the content is not known or something else.

Proposed Tagging

Applies to nodes or area.

Required tagging

  • man_made=storage_tank

Secondary tagging

  • height = <height of the tank in metres>
  • content = water|gas|fuel|oil|manure|crop|cement|slurry|etc...
  • operator = <company name or similar>

Suggested Rendering

Rendering of a node in typical Mapnik colours: Silo1.png in zoom 16 and above, smaller in zoom 14 and 15, appears at about the same zoom level as churches, whose steeples are landmarks of similar size. One could use different inner circle diameters for type of content - liquid, solid or gas. Areas may be mapped with a similar inner outline, if feasible.
