Proposal
The tag natural=peninsula
is used to tag a named peninsula (from Latin paeninsula, from paene 'almost' + insula 'island'): a piece of land projecting into water from a larger land mass and being nearly surrounded by water.
A peninsula can also be part of a larger peninsula.
Tagging
Set a node in the center of the peninsula or draw an area encompassing the peninsula and add natural=peninsula
+ name=*.
Please do not map very large peninsulas like subcontinents as multipolygons as they strain the servers much and are hard to maintain. (Relation#Size recommends a maximum number of 300 members in a relation.)
Rationale
There is currently no approved tag for peninsulas.
natural=peninsula
has already been proposed in 2008 (see Proposed features/peninsula), but has been rejected with the suggestion to use a place=* key instead. Therefore this new proposal initially suggested place=peninsula
. However the RFC discussion showed that natural=peninsula
is preferred because a natural=* key fits better.

natural=cape
The tag natural=cape refers to a coastal extreme point, that is the tip of a land area that projects into water. In contrast, natural=peninsula refers to a land area that projects into water and that is nearly surrounded by water.
A natural=cape
can but doesn't have to be be part of a natural=peninsula
and there can be several natural=cape
on a natural=peninsula
. However, a natural=peninsula
cannot be part of a natural=cape
.
Note that 'cape' sometimes refers to a coastal extreme point, i.e. natural=cape, (e.g. Cape York) and sometimes to a peninsula, i.e. natural=peninsula (e.g. Cape Cod). Besides, both cape and peninsula sometimes share the same name (e.g. Cape York and Cape York peninsula).
Examples
- Engehalbinsel, Switzerland (a special kind of peninsula formed by a meandering river)
- Nes, Norway
- Presqu'île de Quiberon, France
- Shimabara Peninsula, Japan (see image above)
- Llŷn Peninsula, Wales
- Cape Cod, United States
- Cape York peninsula, Australia

- I have comments but abstain from voting on this proposal. I am not principally opposing the idea to map peninsulae, but this proposal seems to lack guidance how to do it, in particular wrt the land boundary. I would expect peninsula inland borders to follow geological/geomorphological features. The aerial image example of the volcanic peninsula nicely shows the curved inland border that could be determined at that scale. Nonetheless all examples show straight lines and no description how to determine it or explanation why the border was determined as shown. In the example of the nested peninsulae the inland border of the bigger one seems quite arbitrary. —Dieterdreist (talk) 09:29, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
- In the discussion i had the impression that people were fine with mapping the inland boundary as a straight line because this boundary usually is indefinite. However, local mappers may know better how to draw it and thus i didn't want to prescribe them how they should do it. –SelfishSeahorse (talk) 12:40, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
