A welcome sign or gateway sign welcomes visitors to a place, such as a city, without providing further detailed information about the place. This tag is typically used with information=board to represent a prominent sign that specifically communicates the message that the traveler has arrived at the place.
Where to find it
A welcome sign board is typically at or near an entrance to the place. However, unlike traffic_sign=city_limit, this sign does not need to be right at the boundary to let the public know the boundary's location. For example, it may be at an exit from an airport or ferry terminal that serves the place.
Examples
-
Village welcome sign (not a traffic sign)
-
City welcome sign (not a traffic sign)
-
Leaving a municipal airport (not a typical traffic sign and nowhere near the boundary)

Some places greet visitors using an elaborate welcome arch, gantry (man_made=gantry), ceremonial gate (man_made=ceremonial_gate), or other monument (historic=monument).
Some places rely on a simple jurisdictional boundary sign to carry a greeting or salutation. Use the traffic sign scheme (traffic_sign=city_limit or the equivalent local code) when the "welcome" sign is part of the local traffic sign standard or resembles other traffic signs. Besides any greeting, the sign has a more important function of informing the public about the location of the boundary, which may imply changes in traffic laws.
Use boundary=marker for a sign or monument that serves as a legal boundary marker.
Use advertising=sign or man_made=sign for a sign that promotes a place without explicitly welcoming visitors. Use tourism=artwork for a work of art, such as a sculpture or mural, that promotes a place.
