This is a tag with very low usage and it is also disputed. It was discussed in Jan 2022 on the tagging mailing list: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2022-January/063719.html

A ford to cross a waterway with a boat that is provided on-site as part of a route. The boat may be attached to a cable for pulling to the opposite side, or there may be two boats on each of the sides.

Commonly this sort of feature is instead mapped with route=ferry as a line and amenity=ferry_terminal at each end.

How to Map

  • use a single node ford where a highway crosses a waterway that is mapped as linear stream without riverbanks
  • use the way-method for larger streams with mapped riverbanks

On a node node

The stream and highways should share a node where they cross marked with ford=boat.

On a way way

The highway should share nodes with the riverbanks where it crosses them and also a node with the waterway=stream where they cross. Split the highway between the riverbanks and apply ford=boat to this segment .
