A water hazard is a natural obstacle, such as ponds, lakes, river and streams, designed to add difficulty to a golf course. Usually marked by yellow stakes or lines, they are covered by specific rules. Nowadays it is known as yellow penalty area.
Before 2019, the name water hazard for area with stakes was used. After 2019 it is now called penalty area marked with yellow stakes, see [1][2]
- Penalty areas may therefore include areas such as deserts, jungles, lava rock fields, etc.
- The term “hazard” is no longer used in the Rules.
The naming of water hazard is still used becuase it is prevalent in the database and it is often water on most courses.
