This feature has been labeled as deprecated. The recommended replacement is: tag:landuse=farmyard or tag:landuse=farmland.|
The reason is documented in Deprecated features. You are still free to continue to use or interpret this tag as you see fit since OpenStreetMap does not have “banned features”. Under no circumstances should you (semi-)automatically change “deprecated” tags to something else in the database on a large scale without conforming to the Automated Edits code of conduct. Any such change will be reverted.
An area of farmland used for tillage and pasture (animals, vegetables, flowers, fruit growing).
Use the tag landuse=farmyard instead to tag an area of land with farm buildings like farmhouses, dwellings, farmsteads, sheds, stables, barns, equipment sheds, feed bunkers, etc. plus the open space in between them and the shrubbery/trees around them.
Obviously in many parts of the world we can expect very large swathes of land (almost everywhere outside of our towns and cities) to be used for farming, and therefore tagged landuse=farm. This may raise some interesting questions about how to handle landuse in general. A more general page on this topic is Land use and areas of natural land. But for the time being perhaps we should follow the Wakefield (permalink) example, and just get on with it!
Also note that many mappers prefer the more specific tags landuse=meadow for meadows and pastures (what is labelled landuse=farm in the picture), landuse=orchard for fruit orchards, and use landuse=farm for cropland only.
It is often useful to map the field boundaries within a farm area, especially when many public rights of way follow these boundaries. The use of various barrier tags is appropriate in this case.
Rendering of this tag was removed with v3.2.0 of openstreetmap-carto (released on 17. April 2017).
OSM NoFarm 1.4 can be used to find still existing instances.
The tag farm had been misunderstood by some users (notably by many German people) and used for tagging also farmyards. As a consequence the tag landuse=farmland was adopted to denote tillage and pasture. At the moment both farm and farmland are used, the former probable still for some farmyards, the latter is the preset value in JOSM. See Proposed_features/farmland.
Community supported agriculture
Farm_boxes is a rejected proposal for marking community supported agriculture (CSA) distribution and pickup points. In some cases this tag would be appropriate to use on existing farms. The tag is used very seldom. See the tag proposal page for more information.
