piste:type=snowmobile is used for a well established snowmobile trail.
Rationale
Many snowmobile trails are only visible during the snow season, with little or no evidence that they exist during the summer. Due to how snow changes the landscape, they may not be used for anything else during the summer. For that reason, they may consist of multiple different ways. In many cases, but not necessarily highway=path or highway=track. Sometimes roads that are closed during snow season may become snowmobile trails. Many times they cross rivers and lakes.
How to map
Create a way
and tag it with piste:type=snowmobile + snowmobile=*.
When part of a Relation:route, it should also be tagged with type=route + route=piste. When part of a trail system with signs route=snowmobile should be used.
Multi use ways
Snowmobile trails may have other uses during other seasons. When this is the case, the same way should have all of the relevant tags applied. They should not be mapped as separate ways.
For example, during the summer, a snowmobile trail may be on a way that is tagged with highway=track. It may be used for ATVs, biking, or hiking. When this is the case, the way should have all of the relevant tags applied in addition to piste:type=snowmobile + snowmobile=*.
