A switching station is a place whose main function is to connect and switch power lines or cables at the same nominal voltage level.

It normally has no main power transformers transferring power between different voltage levels. Auxiliary transformers and instrument transformers do not affect this classification.

Substations whose main function includes power transformation between transmission voltage levels should normally be tagged substation=transmission.

Foyers Switching Station connects and switches 275 kV transmission circuits associated with Foyers pumped-storage power station. The main transformers stepping the generator voltage up from 18 kV to 275 kV are located in the separate power-station substation, rather than within the switching station.
