Drinking Water

I'd suggest keeping it simple by using existing tags when possible.

If a cafe or shop gives out free water for customers, tag the shop or cafe with "drinking_water=customers". If it’s for anyone, "drinking_water=yes" is currently used. I don’t see a need for a new tag "drinking_water=ask"

If there is a drinking fountain, water tap or bottle refill station in a shopping mall or building that has opening_hours, just use amenity=drinking_water plus opening_hours=* on the node. Man_made=water_tap or =drinking_fountain or =water_well can also be added to the same node for more detail.

I believe amenity=drinking_water implies no fee, and public access, so these characteristics do not require explicit tagging --Joseph Eisenberg, @Jeisenbe, 20-Sep-2018

I've extended the section that proposed `drinking_water=ask` with reasoning with a possible mix-up with the owncup=* campaign for tourists. Bkil (talk) 12:31, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Are you sure you don't see a need for the tag "drinking_water=ask"? Bkil has given evidence (see the links he's included in his proposal) for a movement or at least an idea proposed by other communities/charities/campaigns. --Valor Naram (talk) 19:22, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

I propose another option: drink:water=ask / drink:water=free as it is commonly used for availability of other drinks in restaurants. --Norwini (talk) 13:06, 14 Dezember 2019 (UTC)

I see where you are coming from and I did consider the possibility, although I view drink=beer;wine much more contributor friendly and efficient (I can't right now seem to find the article or post on over namespacing and prefix fooling that gives a few reasons). Most data users are currently searching for drinking_water=ask and amenity=drinking_water, hence this would be a semantically distinct concept. Also, there exist a vast number of POI in the mentioned existing databases gathering places where you can ask for water that do not serve either drinks or foods - like private or governmental offices. It would look a bit out of place for them as well. -Bkil (talk) 14:21, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

Free Refills

...

I am strongly against tagging the business practice how often a _paid_ glass of beverage is being refilled (with cheaply produced unhealthy liquids anyway). This is close to a restaurant review and not a geographical property.
I would support however tagging the free tap-water refilling campaign as it is apparently a litter-avoiding idea and presumably ground-verifiable (by some sticker or so at the door?), and not the practice of one particular business. --Polarbear w (talk) 08:27, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
Could you please tell the name of the section of the proposal. I can't follow you. Is your statement related to the section "Free beverages for customers"? --Valor Naram (talk) 19:33, 23 April 2019 (UTC)
I've moved this part of the proposal and this part of the talk page to another proposal: Proposed features/Refilling a purchased drink. I decided not to reword Polarbear's comment that partly applies as is, sorry for the confusion. --Bkil (talk) 19:52, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Some of the previous comments moved to Talk:Proposed features/Refilling a purchased_drink --Bkil (talk) 15:03, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

Free Water proposal

Just wanted to post this here as well; there is another proposal that's being voted on which is very related to this: Proposed features/Free Water

Status

I haven't abandoned this, because marking this will still be required after venues start to reopen. I'm only waiting for your input, because the previous comments were mixed and contradicting. --Bkil (talk) 15:02, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
