Too Generic?

landuse=plot is generic. It will get used for building plots for example.

Another option which has been used elsewhere is allotment=plot. This is an adjectival tag to landuse=allotments which is also unusual as it is only part of the site rather than the whole site.

Another option would be fully descriptive, landuse=allotment_plot. I favour this. I have mapped a lot of allotment sites and rent an allotment plot. Chillly (talk) 16:39, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank-you for your comment. I have to agree, I didn't consider 'plot' in other contexts.
Are their any precedents to use adjectival tags?
I'm new to OSM and tagging. I had kind of hoped their would be support for hierarchical tagging (which would make an effective taxonomy in this case).
I'd be happy to support either change, depending on which would be better understood by the mapping community --Growbradford (talk) 22:42, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
+1 to Chillly's idea. Using allotment=plot makes it clear which type of plot we're talking about, and doesn't mean we have two overlapping landuse=* polygons, which can be problematic. Jonathan Bennett (talk) 08:32, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
Sure, wasn't sure on implications of overlapping polygons.
seems to be consensus on Using allotment=plot anyway. I suppose the chances of getting this rendered differently, if it survives a vote are fairly slim?--Growbradford (talk) 09:57, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Don't use key "landuse" for small/detailed areas

As mentionned many times on the tagging list, the "landuse" key has never been intended to be used for small areas. --Pieren (talk) 08:37, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

acknowledged, thank you. Seems to be strong consensus on moving to and adjectival tag of allotment=plot --Growbradford (talk) 09:34, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

allotment or allotments ?

The map features page is documented with "allotments" in plural. You should not create a tag too closed to an existing one with only the plural/singular difference. It is a common mistake in OSM that contributors ommit the plural (see 'doctors' or 'shop' threads). Then it is impossible to know if they tag individual lot or lots. --Pieren (talk) 08:37, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

understood, se above for proposed clarification/amendaments avoiding the singular plural confusion.--Growbradford (talk) 09:35, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Parcel, lot, plot ?

Somewhere the wiki should clarify the differences between lots, plots and parcels, especially for non-native english readers or if the words have different meaning outside UK. --Pieren (talk) 08:37, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

wikepedia refers to the singular - allotment plot, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening) what this proposal is seeking to define over the plural. Regional naming differences are addressed in the article too.--Growbradford (talk) 09:39, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

Why move to a sub-tag of landuse=allotments?

If you follow the comments below you should see why the decision was made to move from having a 'landuse' tag a sub-tag of 'allotments' as an outcome of the RFC on the taggin mailing list--Growbradford (talk) 20:47, 18 September 2013 (UTC)

The title for this tag has been described as too generic. I would favour a fully descriptive name changed to landuse=allotment_plot. As per guidance I will waited for RFC to close before changing the name.

Some clarity has (hopefully) been provided as their are regional differences in the understanding of a "plot". My definition certainly comes from a British perspective. The definition from wikipedia used in landuse=allotments acuratley describes a collection of allotments plots and individual plots well.

There are similarities bettween an allotment plot and a commnity garden, in that the use of the land is generally made by groups or individual attemtping to become self sufficient rather than make a commercial venture out of using the land. However an allotment plot in the UK would need special permission to become a community garden, and so the distinction stands. A separate proposal exists for such a definition. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Community_food_growing

To give an example I rent an allotment plot on Cecil Avenue allotments here http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=17/53.78394/-1.77741. This is correctly tagged as landuse=allotments. Within that area I have defined the plots (3) that I rent as an area currently tagged again as {tag|landuse|allotments}. http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=19/53.78461/-1.77745. With this proposal I would seek to define each allotment plot as a separare area eith its own tag. However on this same allotment site there is a community food growing project that rent a large number of allomtnet plots together for collective community use. Thie defined use is different by the group that use it and also by the operators that rent it out. And so this would require a distinction from my proposed allotment plot

There has been some question of whether this is micromapping. It may be, however this carries on a rather landmark project where a large authority released a huge cache of data om allotments allowing a hige mapping project to go anead http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/London/Datastore_allotments. This greAtly promoted the use of the new landuse=allotments tag. i believe this was the first step in mapping each allotment plot to get full value out of the data held by local authorities on allotments.

The title for this tag has been described as too generic. I would favour a fully descriptive name changed to landuse=allotment_plot or allotment=plot --Growbradford (talk) 09:32, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
