Talk:Tag:office=university

user:Jeisenbe thanks for trying to "improve" the page, but I think the logic is as follows :

contains

contains

  • office=* - in this case of a university

So the 1) 2) 3) notation makes no sense. "An office for a certain subdomain of a university. Might be a faculty or other division" is less confusing. If you'd like to divide it to certain "suboffices", define it. If you just like to show the probable meanings, divide them by comma or slash or make a common list (using the *). If you tried to hold things up, you did a good job. I think you're one of those who always insist on "discussing" everything first, but you don't refer to any standards. And you've got this obsession to edit everywhere around where I documented something potential useful. If I could detect any logic I would probably be less pissed. But this way I'm sure the behavior is that of a concern troll rtfm Rtfm (talk) 22:38, 21 November 2020 (UTC)

1: As I mentioned in the edit comment, I edited the page after reviewing how this tag is used. See https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/10j1 for all the current uses, which are only in a few dozen places around the world, so it doesn't take to long to check the ones in English (and German). It is usually used for student services or admin offices at a university, though also used for faculties/department offices, and sometimes for tagging any sort of building at a university. I'm not saying that it's great that the tag is used that way, but that's the facts. Certainly it would make more sense to me that office=* would be used for particular office of a unversity in one building, but the tag is also sometimes used in the other ways that are now documented.
2: Re: "don't refer to any standards" - OpenStreetMap is a volunteer community without a central body of laws or rules. However, there are a number of principles which have been accepted by consensus, since they are necessary for the project to work, considering that we are all from different countries and cultures and backgrounds. Most of these are discussed on Good_practice and How_We_Map. Also see recommendations for creating new tags at Proposal_process#Before_creating_a_proposal. I believe there is a general consensus that this wiki is mainly intended to document which tags exist how they are actually used by mappers, rather than prescribing how they ought to be used (though there is the proposal process for that).
3: I review all newly created Tag: and Key: pages which are written in English: your edits are not getting special treatment. --Jeisenbe (talk) 05:03, 22 November 2020 (UTC)
