Proposed value

I feel Zoological gardens aren't really covered by the existing leisure values. I'll try to come up with an appropriate node symbol. --KristianThy 21:34, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Intent: To mark the location of public zoos and zoological gardens.

Tagging:

The new value may be used with the leisure tag with nodes or areas. The proposed tag is:

<tag k="leisure" v="zoo"/>

Proposed Rendering

How about this one -- Batchoy 13:24, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
GCR LEIS ZOO.png
I like it, but perhaps the elephant is too detailed to look good at smaller sizes? --KristianThy 23:50, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Opinion

  • I agree with this proposal (for the tag value itself) and would like to see it go to a vote MikeCollinson 00:21, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
  • I'd like to see this use an 'attraction' key instead (so attraction=zoo). 'Amenity' feels like more of a practical feature to me, and attraction seems like it could be a useful generic term. Frankie Roberto 23:17, 22 July 2007 (BST)
  • I think it may be usefull to have a generic icon for leisure=zoo. Then additional tags like zoo=elephant, zoo=tiger, zoo=penguin, zoo=bird,... These could be rendered as special animal signs. I need this to create a zoo map and be able to find all animals in this zoo. --audifahrer 10:18, 31 August 2007 (BST)
  • Someone placed a zoo icon on the overview page. I disapprove that icon. It's not an symbol, it's a word. Other languages perhaps don't know the word "zoo". Any ideas for a better icon? I replaced it temporary with the elephant icon until someone provides a better generic zoo icon. --audifahrer 12:24, 9 September 2007 (BST)
  • Query use of Elephant Symbol, there are some Zoos that don't have elephants ;) ShakespeareFan00 23:37, 22 October 2007 (BST)

  • I disapprove leisure=zoo, 'leisure' to me implies more of a regular activity location (like sports grounds and parks). Zoos are more of an attraction, so I'd prefer tourism=zoo, or even better, attraction=zoo. However, renderers should probably just accept *=zoo, so it doesn't matter too much what the key is. In the zoo...

...there are pens, cages, aquariums, ... etc. How to map this???????????????
I'll do it this way for the area: Key:Zoo

  • zoo=cage - Lion cage
  • zoo=pen - Ice Bear pens
  • zoo=aquarium - Dolphins aquarium
  • ... and so on

I'll do it this way for the zoo animals: Key:zoo_animal

  • zoo_animal=lion
  • zoo_animal=roe deer
  • zoo_aniaml=zebra
  • zoo_animal=marmot
  • ... and so on

And I have an idea! Key:animal_info

What do you think about this??? Feel free to contact me. --EinKonstanzer 00:04, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

That´s a good idea! I suggest another Tag for plants analog to the animal tag named Key:zoo_plant

  • zoo_plant=Eucalyptus
  • zoo_plant=Cactus
  • ... and so on

I also prefer a localization for the Keys like in the animal_info Key.

  • zoo_animal:de=Löwe
  • zoo_animal:en=lion
  • zoo_animal:de=Reh
  • zoo_animal:en=roe deer
  • zoo_plant:de=Eukalyptus
  • zoo_plant:en=Eucalyptus
  • zoo_plant:de=Kaktus
  • zoo_plant:en=Cactus

Check Berlin Tiergarten for an example.

Perhaps it would be less cluttered if just the generic areas are marked on the map? So Africa, Asia, Birds, Monkeys, etc. Perhaps with sub-keys for specific animals if you want to search for something that specific. The zoo here in Perth, Australia is divided in this way.

Is any enclosure with wildlife a zoo?

The (unapproved) type "zoo=enclosure" implies this. A public accessible enclosure is usually not called a zoo. --Seawolff 23 July 2015

The wiki definition calls for "confined animals on display for viewing by the public". You have often cases in OSM where the tag definition deviates a bit from common language, to define a certain category. zoo=enclosure is the most popular value (686x) for this subtag.--Polarbear w (talk) 09:31, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

I think it would be better to use landuse=animal_enclosure or man_made=enclosure (I prefere landuse). I'm working at Mission:Wolf at the moment and they don't want to be seen as a zoo. Only a few of the enclosures are visible/(accessible) for the public. I think using one of the mentioned tags would be more generic. It would allow to tag other animal_enclosures for example for animal shelter. --Hedaja 19 February 2016

If the animals are "for viewing by the public", it should be tourism=zoo with the appropriate sub-tag. If your wolves are not to be seen, but preserved there, you might look into nature reserve tagging. Animal shelters are already tagged as amenity=animal_shelter. --Polarbear w (talk) 23:17, 19 February 2016 (UTC)

Names should be restricted to the name of the item in question, not the type of the item

When I tag an animal attraction at a zoo, I use the tags, for example, tourism=attraction, attraction=animal, animal=lion.

However, on the wiki page; Tag: tourism=zoo, a user is directed to use, for example, name=African Elephant.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:tourism%3Dzoo#Animal

This seems very much incorrect to me as a name should be used for a name only. Example; name=Jumbo or name=Winnie.

OSM wiki quote, “The names should be restricted to the name of the item in question only and should not include additional information not contained in the official name such as categories, types, descriptions, addresses, refs, or notes.“

An African Elephant is a type of elephant, not the name of an elephant. A White Lion is a type of lion, not the name of a lion.

I plan to make edits to the wiki pages concerning this, but I thought I’d toss this idea out there for comment. Chachafish (talk) 14:20, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
