"DONE" tasks

"Extend OSM Mapnik stylesheet to show other religion symbols, instead of just a Christian symbol for all religions" task is by no means completed. There is now a special case for religion=jewish on graveyards and that's it. When religion != jewish it still renders Christian cross, which isn't exactly religion-neutral. Calling it done is an overstatement.

Since Mapnik stylesheet now seems to be fixed due to the bug 1271, I can happily withdraw the above comment. Marian 14:25, 26 September 2010 (BST)

And in these days / month we have the Data Query Feature and Routing Feature on osm.org main site ... time to clean up this wiki listing? --Stephan75 (talk) 19:41, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Delete this page!

I think this page can be deleted. It's never going to be how we organise ourselves, and it hasn't been particularly useful over the last few years. Gravitystorm 15:42, 11 May 2011 (BST)

In November 2011 this page underwent a bit of a rewrite carried out by User:Matt, User:Amm as an activity of the EWG. So the list was nicely up-to-date then at least, but I notice it's gradually slipping out of date again.
"never going to be how we organise ourselves" is probably still true, but I think in a way this kind of list is very valuable. Something like a planning/roadmap document for the benefit of existing and new developers (And by 'developers' we're talking about the kind of folks who can get stuck into these big tasks. Not your average tinkerer like me) There's value in the list, but only if it's updated and maintained by somebody who knows.

Update Tiles

The Ordnance Survey OpenData StreetView tiles are considerably out of date and can be updated for free. The Bing aerial imagery in the UK has been updated recently but is not available via the OSM editors yet.

If both of these points are addressed then recent changes and new developments can be rapidly mapped, including building shapes.

Smarter labelling

Even dealing with conflicting labels for points, automatic smart dealing with long labels and multipolygon labelling is as far as I know completely unsolved. Even for software focused on making maps with high quality labels - that is expected to run very long and on small areas. It is not really top 10 task, but I have no better place to put it and reoccurs in various discussions Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 06:14, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Could you elaborate this a bit? I do not know what you mean. Is it about tagging quality or about rendering of area names? Which labels conflict? What do you mean by a label? --Tigerfell This user is member of the wiki team of OSM (Let's talk) 12:49, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
About rendering, with label as "displayed text, usually from name=*". Conflicts are typical for example in areas with multiple POIs (see any mall) Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 18:04, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

Localized map rendering

Is there any updates on this? I'm interested in this project. I have been working on this for some time, and now stuck on this. Rtnf (talk) 14:34, 5 September 2022 (UTC)

@Rtnf No there are no updates on this. This is a difficult, comprehensive, and important task so if there were updates then people would post them. Thank you for working on a solution. If you would like help, I would recommend posting to the dev mailing list. Feel free to also document your attempt on the Wiki page and the project's details.
