User:Kitsee/11kv power lines

This page describes my progress on manually importing UK 11kv infrastructure data from Western Power Distribution(WPD) and National Grid Electricity Distributions(NGED). This data includes overhead and underground power lines, pole mounted transformers and ground mounted substations/transformers. The data is organized into 20x20km blocks using OS grid refences.

Process

This section is currently mostly a reminder to myself since I tend to take breaks between grids.

Create Progress File

  1. Open OHL data file for grid
  2. Open Underground data file for grid
  3. Open substations data file for grid
  4. Merge all 3 layers into 1
  5. Run NGEDtoOSM script
  6. Save as .osm file

Add Data

  • Power poles are rarly positioned perfectly and need tweaking.
  • The data regularly contains extra power poles that do not exist and should be deleted.
  • Most supports on a 11kv line will be power=pole but on occasions a support that uses multiple vertical poles can be used, for these use power=tower. the easest way to determine support type is by looking at the shadow on imagery.
  • On rarer occasions power lines and poles can take the completely wrong path and need to be corrected (data was most likely originally created by hand incorrectly).
  • Where underground cables transition to overhead lines, underground line should be glued to the power pole, and the following tags added:
line_management = transition
location:transition = yes
  • Where a underground line meets a ground substation, the underground line should either be glued to the ground substation node or the substation node should be converted into an area and the underground line terminate within that area.
  • Underground lines should be tweaked slightly so they do not run on top of one another.
