Editing Railroads starting from TIGER data

Current State of the Map (California/Railroads)

OSM California Railroad data are in an "early beta" state. This means California rail from OSM's noisy 2007 TIGER data import (plus good rail tagging since) have been reviewed, corrected and developed moderately to a state of rough accuracy. Minor errors remain in infrastructure and some tables below and routes (both route=railway and route=train) remain incomplete or underdeveloped. However, "shining star examples" exist: Bakersfield Subdivision (route=railway), Antelope Valley Line (route=train), BART (a route=subway system), Pacific Surfliner (public_transport:version=1 route) and San Joaquin (public_transport:version=2 route). These should be emulated for other routes of their type which remain incomplete or underdeveloped. However, the San Joaquin route leaves something to be desired as a "model v2 route" so please also see Relation: Brunswick Line: Frederick => Union Station of the Maryland Transit Administration as an exemplary v2 route, as it has excellent platform members.

At wider zoom levels z≤7 in OpenRailwayMap (ORM), California is seen to have a structure of mainline (orange) and at z=8 branch (yellow) rail, due to many cohesive usage=* and name=* tags. Most rail have name=*, though a small number still have original TIGER name=* (which should be changed to operator=*) and a very few correctly named rail may not yet have been collected as members into a named route=railway relation. So, both of these tasks are important OSM work to continue. However, even without name=* tags, with incorrect name=* tags or without rail segments gathered into named route=railway relations, because of TIGER rail entry and especially because usage=* displays in ORM, a roughly correct California rail infrastructure can be seen. Some mainline and branch rail support passenger traffic with route=train relations, offering passenger=national (long_distance/continental), passenger=regional (often overlaps with "statewide rail") or commuter services (frequently countywide: passenger=suburban, passenger=urban or passenger=local, less often multiple counties), since railway=light_rail (largely city-scale) can semantically blur with "commuter rail." One goal of this wiki is to clarify which are which, now complete.

At closer zoom level z=9, ORM displays railway=rail (without usage=* as black, though be aware that usage=tourism and usage=military also display as black), railway=disused (as brown-gray) and railway=abandoned (as dashed brown-gray). California still has hundreds of rail kilometers whose name=* and/or usage=* are currently unknown, or are tagged railway=rail while they are truly railway=disused or railway=abandoned (or vice versa), but this isn't known. Cleanup of TIGER data must continue on these railway=disused or railway=abandoned rail segments: accurately determining whether or not they are in use and/or assigning proper name=* and/or usage=* tags. This is a current frontier of California Railroads in OSM, as are complete identification and cataloging of usage=industrial rail, which ORM displays as brown. OSM approaches completion here, yet remains slightly incomplete, especially around Los Angeles and its harbors.

At zoom level z=10, railway=light_rail and railway=subway display in ORM as green and dark blue (respectively). There are six light rail systems in California: Los Angeles Metro, San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), VTA in Silicon Valley, Sacramento RT Light Rail, San Diego Trolley and North County Transit District's SPRINTER. Subways (usually underground, suburban/longer-distance, so-called "heavy rail") include Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and underground lines (Red, Purple) of Los Angeles Metro. Though some of these systems still contain minor OSM errors, they approach completeness, including planned future extensions (which ORM displays as dotted or dashed for proposed or under construction). However, further ongoing review and correction are welcome as they continue to expand and improve, especially around Los Angeles County. Additional public_transport=platform nodes/polygons are needed, as well as including these in route relations, facilitating their upgrade to public_transport:version=2. This is an excellent opportunity to build better community/volunteer efforts and better data with a Map Your Train Ride! approach (to rail transit platform locations and amenities): plant seeds (platforms), and green shoots (version 2 train routes) can and do grow!

Even closer ORM zoom levels (z>=11) display railway=tram as pink (notably, San Francisco's Cable Cars). Trams are distinctly "streetcar," yet often share similarities with light rail. In San Francisco, Muni and Cable Cars are largely distinct with these tags (though, Muni E Embarcadero and F Market & Wharves are streetcar/tram), even as both systems have street-tracked cars: Muni (green) goes underground in many places, Cable Cars (pink) are exclusively above-ground, largely street-running. BART (dark blue) is mostly underground throughout San Francisco and the wider Bay Area, while Caltrain (orange), especially with its "Baby Bullet" service, is above-ground mainline commuter rail, except for a few tunnels. (ORM uses transparency [a desaturated dark blue, green, orange, yellow, red...] to denote underground rail or tunnels). Trams are believed complete in California/Railroads, though there may be some actual trams now denoted railway=miniature in the Tourism, heritage and historic trains table which remain unentered into OSM.

California began (in June 2015) construction of the first dedicated high-speed rail in the USA, largely around Fresno. Phase 1 will link San Francisco via Los Angeles to Anaheim. Phase 2 will extend to Sacramento and San Diego. There are more than 100 miles of construction underway in the Central Valley [1] to complete Phase 1 between 2025 (the Silicon Valley to Central Valley portion) and 2029 (the entirety of Phase 1). Enter segments of this infrastructure as ways tagged with railway=construction + construction=rail + usage=main + highspeed=yes + name=California High Speed Rail (CHSR) and include them in this relation. This is only in its very earliest stages of completion in OSM; ORM displays early CHSR as red in Fresno.

Suggestions

If you wish to improve California railroads in OSM:

• Follow unreviewed TIGER rail along its length (usually black lines in ORM, though be aware that usage=tourism and usage=military also display as black), comparing it with your best data. These data might be many things: a survey or GPS track, Public Utilities Commission crossing data, Bing imagery, rail enthusiast lore that OSM has permission to use or personal rail knowledge that is "on the ground verifiable."

• Find the "red" or "yellow" route=railway relation table entries below and improve them: assemble identically named rail segments (not already gathered) into a correctly-named route=railway relation. It CAN be tedious to stitch these together properly!

• Using an Overpass Turbo query or ORM (black lines, though be aware that usage=tourism and usage=military also display as black), find unreviewed TIGER rail incorrectly named as a railroad (e.g. name=Union Pacific Railroad). Properly tag these with e.g. operator=Pacific Harbor Line, name=ABC Industrial Lead and usage=industrial.

• Using an Overpass Turbo query or ORM (railway=disused as brown and railway=abandoned as dashed brown lines), find TIGER rail with incorrect status. Properly tag these with knowledge of whether they are truly disused, abandoned or active rail.

• Clean up yards using Bing imagery or better knowledge. Currently yards are moderately correct, but can use improvement from recent Bing imagery or newer real-world data. Please keep the Yards table on this wiki page updated as you do.

• See the excellent source from Caltrans ca_rail_schematics.pdf (April, 2016 version or later), a comprehensive document detailing California passenger rail infrastructure. Add track name, Control Point, milepost, maxspeed and other data to OSM.

Map Your Train Ride! Add public_transport=platforms to the route=train relation of your commute. It's easy: add a node or draw a small polygon representing the exact location of the platform, and tag with public_transport=platform, railway=platform and rail=yes, light_rail=yes, subway=yes or tram=yes. You might also add it to the proper route=train relation(s) which should be found around that railway=station. For further guidance, see this diagram of a "simple railway station".

More work needs doing, especially in Los Angeles County. (Specifically, the area around LA's two major harbors presently contains a confusion of rail elements that need better tagging). "More work" includes improving yards statewide and reducing or eliminating tracks=# tags (entering each distinct track element). Eventually, all named rail should be in route=railway relations. California railroads are not 100% there yet, but continue to approach this subgoal. Another goal is for all route=train relations (passenger rail) to contain accurate relation memberships of (named) track infrastructure, largely done but not complete — another frontier. Other frontiers are maxspeed=* and railway=signal tags, barely extant now.

Seriously: should you take a look and decide to do so, almost everything here can use review and/or improvement, especially performing TIGER review and improving tagging from public_transport:version=1 v1 to public_transport:version=2 v2. Thank you!

Active Lines (Mainline, Branch, Industrial and Short)

California railroads operated over 11045 km of track and carried 6,539,700 carloads of freight totaling over 156.1 million tons (2011 data). Class I railroads – the designation for the major freight rail carriers – are represented in California by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF). These two railroads have extensive rail networks connecting California with the rest of the nation, particularly corridors to the Southwest, Midwest, and Northwest. Including rights obtained by one railroad to operate its trains over another railroad's tracks (trackage rights), these two railroads operate over a total of 8713 km, about 79% of total rail in California. In addition to these major carriers, local markets in California may be served by smaller freight rail known as “short line” railroads (sometimes medium-sized Class II, usually smaller-sized Class III), which serve a particular market or which provide feeder service to the national freight rail network represented by the UP and the BNSF.

Lines, expressed as route=railway relations, that see active, regular rail traffic, whether freight, industrial or passenger.

The Active Lines tables are "mostly complete." There may still exist some minor usage=industrial lines or spurs not yet included here. If you find a railroad, subdivision, line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Union Pacific Railroad (UP)

In California, UP operates an expansive network of over 5284 km of track, almost 48% of California's railroads.

Industrial

As noted above, there may still exist some minor usage=industrial lines or spurs not yet included here.

Short Lines (Branch, Industrial or Freight, occasionally Main)

Active "short lines" (often Class III railroads) expressed as route=railway relations. Short Lines largely have underlying infrastructure tags of usage=branch or usage=industrial. On occasion, usage=main is found on Short Line passenger routes, for example, SDNX supports COASTER and JPBX supports Caltrain service=commuter route=trains. Some Short Line infrastructure elements are tagged railway=light_rail to reflect their primary usage, while tracks are also used (temporally shared at night) as usage=branch or usage=industrial, for example, San Diego MTS's SDAE Blue and Orange by SDIY and North County Transit District's SDNR SPRINTER by PSRR.

There remain some railways tagged usage=military which might be collected into relations and added to this or a sibling section. Some military rail segments are tagged tiger:name_base=US Government Railroad (or similar), though these can and do vary on military reservations (e.g. "Old Rail Garrison Railroad," "U S Navy RR R W"). An Overpass Turbo search for way["usage"="military"] can be useful. Because of histories from Sacramento Northern Railway, Union Pacific and OSM's TIGER import, rail data in the areas of NWS Concord and MOT Concord likely need review and/or improvement.

All of that now said, Short Lines tables are "mostly complete." If you find a railroad, subdivision, line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

Genesee & Wyoming (ARZC, CFNR, CORP, SDIY, SJVR, VCRR)

A "railroad holding company" with six railroads which, in five cases own trackage and in one case has operator rights on trackage in California.

Also, CFNR has trackage rights on NCRA between Schellville and Willits.

Siskiyou Relation 4522356 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Weed - Montague - Eugene (Oregon) Partially complete Only the California segment (not Oregon) is included in the Siskiyou Subdivision relation of this Class II railroad. Indeed, this may be named "Siskiyou Subdivision" in California only; this is not known. Needs the Oregon segment added to the relation. Hauls logs, lumber products, and plywood.
San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway (SDAE),
San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIY)

Complexities in San Diego partly arise from difficult physical trackage on SDAE's Desert branch and tumultuous corporate ownership and financing histories. In short, San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) owns SDAE while Genesee & Wyoming has temporal (nighttime) industrial/freight trackage operator rights on SDAE's Blue and Orange as SDIY (BNSF interchange in Downtown San Diego at yard on Cesar Chavez Parkway). From San Diego's Santa Fe Depot northward to Oceanside, North County Transit District (COASTER as SDNX) owns tracks and from Oceanside to Fullerton SCRRA (Metrolink as SCAX) owns tracks, while BNSF has operator rights on these segments (San Diego - Oceanside - Fullerton). This allows SDIY, BJRR, (PIR, apparently less so, as of 2016) and PSRR to interchange via BNSF. For UP interchange, PIR is believed to have operator rights from Plaster City to Seeley on UP's El Centro Subdivision, although PIR filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2016. It is a little complicated around here!

Blue Relation 6159026 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) San Diego - San Ysidro Looks good Owned by San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) as SDAE to support San Diego Trolley UC San Diego Blue Line (route=light_rail passenger service) during daytime and evening hours (assumed in OSM to be until 2359), member ways tagged railway=light_rail. Reporting Marks of light_rail rolling stock on Blue are SDTI. San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIY, owned by Genesee & Wyoming) operates light industrial/freight during nighttime hours (0200-0330), these segments should be tagged usage=industrial.
Orange Relation 6159028 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) San Diego - El Cajon Looks good Owned by San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) as SDAE to support San Diego Trolley Orange Line (route=light_rail passenger service) during daytime and evening hours (assumed in OSM to be until 2359), member ways tagged railway=light_rail. Reporting Marks of light_rail rolling stock on Orange are SDTI. San Diego and Imperial Valley Railroad (SDIY, owned by Genesee & Wyoming) operates light industrial/freight during nighttime hours (0200-0330), these segments should be tagged usage=industrial.
Green Relation 6159081 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) San Diego - La Mesa Looks good Owned by San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) to support San Diego Trolly Green Line (route=light_rail passenger service) during daytime and evening hours. No industrial/freight operates on Green, it is "passenger only," member ways tagged railway=light_rail. Reporting Marks of light_rail rolling stock on Green are SDTI. Green was built after purchase of SDAE from SP, so MTS owns Green, but as part of SDAE or SDTI only?
Desert Relation 4515759 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Division (Mexican border near Campo) - Plaster City Needs minor to moderate TIGER review Owned by San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) as SDAE. Just the California segments are included in the relation. Excluded are the Mexico segments from Tijuana to Tecate (Baja California Railroad, BJRR) Relation 6184566 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx), as SP relinquished interest in Mexico segments in 1970. BJRR owns and operates industrial/freight on Mexico segments of Desert (and, as of June 2016, operates industrial/freight on California segments, too?). Pacific Imperial Railroad (PIR) may also retain some operator rights on California segments of Desert (only) as it undertakes a major track rehabilitation project scheduled for completion at the end of 2018. PIR may also have trackage rights on UP's El Centro Subdivision from Plaster City to Seeley, although PIR filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in late 2016. As San Diego MTS owns Desert (actually, all five rows of SDAE in this table), it is reiterated that Genesee & Wyoming is an industrial/freight operator only on Blue and Orange as SDIY (it is complicated around here). Finally, a segment north of Division to Campo supports Golden State usage=tourism demonstration passenger route=trains at Pacific Southwest Railway Museum as SDAX.
Coronado Relation 6159489 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) San Diego (12th Street Junction) - Imperial Beach Looks good Owned by San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) as SDAE. Had some SDIY usage=industrial traffic (potash, salt) in the 1990s and early 2000s, appears to have become fully abandoned soon after that.

North Coast Railroad Authority (NCRA),
Northwest Pacific Railroad Company (NWPCo)

North Coast Railroad Authority (NCRA) was formed in 1989 by the California Legislature to railbank (ensure railroad service continuation) >500 km of former Northwestern Pacific right of way. In 1992, NCRA purchased the railroad from Willits north (to line-end at Samoa). In 1995-6, a separate transaction added the line from Healdsburg north to the NCRA's holdings and provided for a joint powers authority, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad Authority (NWPRA) to own right of way from Healdsburg south to Schellville for SMART passenger service. (At Schellville, CFNR grants trackage rights to Lombard/Napa Jct., where the railroad feeds CFNR's Schellville 20 km short line to connect to Union Pacific mainline at Fairfield-Suisun). In 2003, NWPRA was dissolved into SMART. In 2006, NWP Company (NWPCo) was selected by NCRA to lease, manage and operate trains on the line and is now the exclusive common carrier of all industrial/freight and passenger excursion trains between Lombard and Willits. To summarize: lines between Healdsburg depot and Schellville (Healdsburg Segment, Brazos Branch) are owned by SMART and Healdsburg-Willits–Eureka/Samoa portions (Willits Segment, Eel River Block, Humboldt Bay Block) are owned by NCRA.

"Russian River Division" extends from Schellville (with trackage rights on CFNR to Lombard) west to US Highway 101 at Ignacio Wye near Novato, then north to Willits, a distance of about 241 km, including the 14 km segment south of Ignacio Wye to San Rafael.
Eel River Block begins north of Willits, through Eel River Canyon to Humboldt County and South Fork, a distance of about 156 km.
Humboldt Bay Block begins north of South Fork to Rio Dell, Fortuna, Eureka and Arcata, then around Humboldt Bay to Samoa, a distance of about 103 km.

Traffic and activity vary greatly. Since mid-2011, freight appears to be lightly active (grain, lumber, LPG, wine) between Schellville and Windsor, perhaps as far north as Redwood Valley. Commencement of SMART Phase 1 passenger service is now in "soft open," with full service likely to begin in August, 2017. As of early 2017, significant track segments are tagged railway=disused, largely north of Willits. There may be industrial/freight activity between Fortuna - Arcata, as well as short-run "speeders" between Eureka - Samoa. There is also controversial derelict motive power in Eureka painted primer gray. This is a dynamic railroad, with much going on along hundreds of km of track, so accurate updates are appreciated, especially as SMART targets its imminent service opening.

Railtrails and "Transitways"

A railtrail uses a former railroad right-of-way (ROW) for equestrian, bicycle or hiking paths, preserving the ROW for possible future re-use as a railway while providing a useful service in the meantime. These are often tagged highway=cycleway or highway=footway depending on whether they prefer or allow bicycle or pedestrian traffic. It is OK to tag both railway=abandoned and highway=cycleway if it is the case that an abandoned railway became a railtrail (for bicycle use, for example).

There is also the LA Metro Orange Line which is nearly completely a railway=abandoned and also a type=route bus=designated. The ROW used to be Burbank Branch Line which provided passenger rail service from 1904 to 1920 and was subsequently used by Pacific Electric streetcars from 1938 to 1952. In OSM, this is emerging: Orange might be considered "railtrail" but as there are parallel segments for pedestrians and bicycles in places, it seems better considered as a "transitway."

The LA Metro Silver Line also uses significant portions of railway=abandoned tagged together with type=route bus=designated. It is not well-represented in OSM.

There are entries in the Abandoned tables (above) which contain significant segments of railtrail (usually ped/bike). It can be a bit of a coin-toss whether they should be here or there.

This table is incomplete. If you find a line (relation link, Review Status...) that needs to be added, updated or improved, please do so!

A convention is started in the Amtrak table below: some Trains (route ref=*) separated by a dash (as a range) are v1, by a comma (as individual routes in a route_master super-relation) are v2.

Route Trains Passenger Service Relation Status
California Zephyr 5-6 national Relation 905830 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v1. The relation is said to be so big it is hard to work with (>2500 members). 2438 miles (Chicago - Emeryville, California)
Coast Starlight 11-14 national Relation 2812900 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v1. Seattle Subdivision needs fixing. 1377 miles (Seattle - Los Angeles).
Southwest Chief 3, 4 national Relation 4720714 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v2. Seligman Subdivision needs fixing. 2265 miles (Chicago - Los Angeles).
Sunset Limited 1-2 national Relation 297142 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v1; Needs track/station node ordering, fixes around Houston. 1995 miles (New Orleans - Los Angeles).
Texas Eagle 21-22; 321-322; 421-422 national Relation 2795760 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v1; Needs track split fixes in Arizona; tracks around Saint Louis are estimated. 2728 miles (Chicago - San Antonio - Los Angeles).

Colors are national Amtrak routes = royal blue, regional Amtrak California routes = California state poppy (color of flower, orange), ocean blue and khaki.

Amtrak California passenger=regional trains (CDTX)

The Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Board (CCJPB) consists of two representatives from each of the eight counties in The Capitol Corridor: Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, Solano, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Alameda and Santa Clara, represented by Placer County Transportation Planning Agency, Sacramento Regional Transit District, San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, Solano Transportation Authority, and the Yolo County Transportation District. The CCJPB is also supported by the two metropolitan planning organizations in The Capitol Corridor – the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Sacramento Area Council of Governments.

The LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN) “is composed of elected officials representing rail owners, operators, and planning agencies along Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner corridor between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. The objective of the agency is to coordinate planning and programs that increase ridership, revenue, reliability, and safety on the coastal rail line from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles to San Diego.”

The San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA) enables local and regional agencies throughout most of the San Joaquin Corridor (Bakersfield - Fresno - Modesto - Stockton - Sacramento - Oakland) to assume the administration and management of Amtrak's existing San Joaquin Rail Service from Caltrans' Division of Rail.

Caltrans, through its Division of Rail, provides support to California intercity (passenger=regional) passenger rail services via CCJPB, LOSSAN and SJJPA. This support includes planning and financial assistance for capital and operating expenses, consistent with its mission to “provide and promote intercity passenger rail services while improving, expanding, and integrating all rail service into California's transportation system." As a result of the "more local" administrations of CCJPD/LOSSAN/SJJPA and newer model of Caltrans funding, "Amtrak California" branding and livery is less prominent, but it is still believed to be in existence.

Route Trains Passenger Service Relation Status
Capitol Corridor 518-553; 720-751 regional Relation 2845553 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; public_transport v1. 272 km (San Jose - Oakland - Sacramento - Auburn). Phase 1 southern extension from San José (Diridon) to Gilroy (+49 km) and Salinas (+60 km) expected in 2018, for a new total length of 381 km. New infill stations at Pajaro (to serve Watsonville) and Castroville (to serve Monterey) as Phase 2, no revenue service date specified.
Pacific Surfliner 562-597; 763-799 regional Relation 2812898 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Complete; rough public_transport v1. 565 km (San Diego - Los Angeles - Santa Barbara - San Luis Obispo).
San Joaquin 701-718 regional Relation 4668744 (XML, iD, JOSM, Potlatch2, history, analyze, manage, gpx) Not complete if exact platform locations count. Let's agree that they do. Let's improve this relation; rough public_transport v2. Use as a rough model v2 example route in California, other (Maryland) routes have better platform members. Needs better platform members. Map your train ride! 507 km (Bakersfield - Stockton - Oakland), 454 km (Bakersfield - Stockton - Sacramento).

For shorter distance intrastate service=commuter trains, see below. On these route=train relations (Metrolink, COASTER, Caltrain, ACE, SMART), service=commuter is correct: "Local trains that have frequent schedules to satisfy the needs of work commuters...largely state-run/city-run services for connecting a metropolitan area to its central city." Some (Metrolink Antelope Valley, ACE, SMART, Caltrain as it might extend to Salinas and perhaps San Luis Obispo...) may eventually grow long enough to tag passenger=regional instead. Relations tagged route=light_rail and especially route=subway sometimes also get service=commuter, though this is omitted on route=tram and route=monorail due to their much shorter distances.

OpenPublicTransportMap (OPTM) displays passenger rail in route=train relations. At closer zooms, OPTM also displays route=light_rail, route=subway, route=tram, route=monorail, route=funicular, route=bus, route=trolleybus, route=aerialway and route=ferry with colors similar to ORM. Please compare and contrast ORM (rail infrastructure) and OPTM (passenger routes) with OSM's Transport layer which rather simply displays "any and all rail" (railway=*), though not disused or abandoned rail, and at closer zooms, route=bus. Thanks to Indy Hurt and Mapzen, here is another rail renderer which displays rail-based passenger routes with their colour=* or color=* tag.

Most routes are Complete, at least to a rudimentary stage of public_transport:version=1. Underway now are improvements to these route=train relations to public_transport:version=2 (with a route_master super-relation and bi-directional route logic). See the San Joaquin route, which can be used as a model public_transport:version=2 example — but while this relation has stations, it has few platforms. For an example v2 route with better station and platform members see Relation: Brunswick Line: Frederick => Union Station of the Maryland Transit Administration. A goal is for all routes to become public_transport:version=2, each identically-tracked train with its own route and precise platform locations.

A new Metrolink station in Placentia, which will serve the 91/Perris Valley Line's north Orange County passengers, has completed its final design phase, save for issues related to the parking needed to accompany the station. Construction on the $24 million Placentia station is projected to begin in late 2017, and scheduled to open in 2019.

The San Bernardino-Redlands Passenger Rail Corridor, a 14 km eastward rail extension from San Bernardino to Redlands and Mentone, is planned by the San Bernardino Associated Governments (SANBAG). The association was considering whether to extend commuter rail along the corridor or to install either bus rapid transit or light rail lines, but as of December 2015, SANBAG plans to extend Metrolink service only to the San Bernardino Transit Center and use diesel multiple units operated by Omnitrans in lieu of Metrolink locomotive-hauled coaches on the rest of the route. The project, budgeted at $242 million, began final design in 2015. Construction is projected to begin in late 2017, with service starting in late 2019.

About the colors in the Name, Route and Service Line columns

Green means that the route's TIGER data in OSM are fully reviewed. This strongly implies that all other relation attributes are correct, but this isn't always strictly true; see Notes/Status column. Green does not conflict with active public_transport:version v1-v2 growth. Go!

Yellow means "only partially reviewed" ; additional volunteer work is needed to enter or correct additional route data (railway and/or train) into OSM. Yellow may also mean a route has a volunteer entering data, yet route ambiguities persist about what is actually correct.

Red means that "something" (often very little) is known about the route, so it is useful to put a row in the table about it as a placeholder, but it likely may be too early to create a route relation: route data are unknown, incomplete or route attributes are significantly missing.

About the colors in passenger-oriented Route and Passenger Service columns

For route=train, route=subway, route=light_rail, route=tram these displayed (web) colors are intended to reflect real-world colors denoted by the transportation authority network, such as in printed, painted or otherwise visually branded materials directly associated with a particular route. A goal is towards more state/national agreement and completion. An initial example is that for Amtrak Cascades service in Washington state, OSM's Amtrak wiki table and Indy Hurt's transit-colours renderer both display a closely matching shade of green, which in turn (by intention) better match livery of rolling stock found only on those tracks by that line and class of service. Similar early harmony among Amtrak and California/Railroads is underway, e.g. Capitol Corridor (California state poppy orange), Pacific Surfliner (ocean blue). Color harmony, in motion.
