La compagnie néerlandaise TomTom fabrique toute une gamme de matériels de naviagtion par satellite basés sur linux et notamment des GPS pour automobiles et plusieurs cartes. De plus, leurs logiciels fonctionnent sur de nombreux assistants personnels (PDA) et téléphones portables dotés d'une connexion bluetooth ou d'un récepteur GPS.

Les navigateurs ne permettent pas normalement d'enregistrer des traces. Néanmoins, tous les appareils TomTom récents tournent sous Linux et il est possible d'y installer d'autres logiciels permettant d'étendre les fonctionnalités de base. Des outils utiles (pour par exemple enregistrer les traces) sont listés ci-dessous :
Utiliser les cartes OSM avec son TomTom
Le logiciel Navit permet d'obtenir de bons résultats, allez voir sur leur wiki Navit on TomTom.
Le format de cartographie TomTom est fermé (et gardé secret), à la fois pour se protéger des copies et aussi parce que si l'on sait comment sont stockées les cartes, de nombreux secrets de fabrication sont dévoilés. Ainsi, il n'existe pas de logiciel permettant de convertir les cartes OSM vers le format TomTom, et il est peu probable qu'il en existe un jour, à moins que la firme TomTom s'en charge elle-même.
- ttMaps permet d'afficher des cartes raster (au format ECW) pour la navigation. Il est possible de l'utiliser avec les cartes OSM que l'on a téléchargées.
- Une autre solution pour afficher les cartes OSM sur un TomTom serait de porter Gosmore sur OpenTom. (mail)
- Ou encore TomTom Open PixelMap (TTOPM), qui utilise des tuiles OSM déjà téléchargées. (et ça marche bien)

Outils d'enregistrement
- Le Web Bazar offers several add-on applications for tomtom units including
- NMEALogger dumps the nmea output from the receiver into a log file on the memory card or internal FLASH memory. New logs can be automatically created when the unit is resumed.
- Tripmaster is a more complex applet, with compass, GPS position and such. It can log directly to GPX or KML files. However, it is using the corrected (copyrighted) position from the tomtom software as default. Therefore it must be switched to "Real" coordinates for collecting tracks for OSM. As a downside of Tripmaster, the TomTom moving map is moving noticably slower (sometimes even freezes for a few seconds) and the TomTom often crashes when selecting a new routing target. The recommended configuration settings (reachable by pressing the ][ button at the bottom right) are:
- Setup: Coordinates "Real" - to get "uncorrected" GPS coordinates, this is important
- TTTracklog is a light alternative which can generate nmea log files as well as ready to upload .gpx track files. Once started, it permanently runs in the background. There is no user interaction. Except for from time to time the generated logfiles need to be copied to a PC. The tracks are of most acuracy and the resolution is one sample per second.
- log2itn is a little tool, which can convert nmea.log files into .gpx files using various options to decimate the number of trackpoints without loosing significant information. It is a commandline-tool for linux, windows and the TomTom device itself. It also outputs a track statistics and summary information.
- Event Logger can produce GPX tracks. In early versions the produced GPX tracks were corrected by the TomTom's built-in Maps, and hence using them in OSM is not possible. Versions 6.4 and newer can make a GPX of the raw data from the GPS device. Note: The log interval should be something around 1 second and the Event Logger only logs your position every 10 seconds (?), this is enough to map straight streets but you'll not have enough data to map a turn or smaller details. - ttMaps enables the display of raster maps (ECW format) for navigation. While ttMaps can handle tiled maps, it's faster when using a single big image for each map set. Among the features which are most interesting for OSM users and mappers:
- Track recording, import and export (GPX)
- NMEA stream recording
- Pedestrian mode to get smoother GPS coordinates (must be enabled for OSM data collection)
- Back and forth switching between several sets of maps, at the touch of a button (installing several OSM map sets rendered at different zoom levels, this feature can be used as a slippy map zooming function)
- Display of the current or of a stored track (great to visually check which parts have already been explored)
- Route display (GPX)
- POI management (GPX and OV2 formats), with position averaging function.
- Switch off the display after a certain time (configurable) of non-use, for increased battery life. --Kaitu 12:32, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

OpenTom
OpenTom est un projet libre pour les TomTom. Ce projet a deux objectifs :
- Le premier est d'écrire et répertorier les logiciels que l'on peut ajouter au logiciel TomTom normal.
- Le second est d'écrire a nouveau programme à partir de rien. Pour l'instant, il n'y a ni cartes, ni outil de navigation.
Utiliser les points d'intérêt d'OSM avec les TomTom
Il est possible d'employer les points d'intérêt d'OSM avec TomTom. Chaque semaine, Cloudmade exporte des POI du monde entier et les rend disponibles au téléchargement via leur site web [1]. Par exemple, pour les POI californiens, il suffit de télécharger le fichier [2], puis d'extraire le contenu (des fichiers ov2) sur votre TomTom.
