Core software

Core software is a nebulous term that refers to a subset of software projects without which the OpenStreetMap project would be unable to function day to day. As such, the Operations Working Group has a hand in running the main openstreetmap.org installations of some of these software packages. The OpenStreetMap Foundation also retains a paid Core Software Development Facilitator to promote the health of several of these projects.

openstreetmap-website (formerly known as the "Rails port") and openstreetmap-cgimap are usually included in this category. Less well-known projects include mod_tile, osmdbt, and planet-dump-ng. Historically, some have also regarded certain renderers (such as Osmarender and OpenStreetMap Carto), geocoders (Name finder, Nominatim), and editors (Potlatch, JOSM, iD) as core projects, due to overlap among developers. However, this is less common today, as many editors and data consumers have grown into significant projects in their own right with a degree of independence from day-to-day operations.
