The key date has different uses:
- Does a clock
amenity=clockalso show the current date? (Status: "approved"
). - Date when the related event happened

It has been suggested to deprecate this key and replace it with others, see community:135862.

Possible tagging mistakes
This tag was also heavily used for other, unknown reasons (for example date=2014 added to most minor roads in one rectangle in Mexico)
Some uses by mappers included specifying date when feature was mapped. See survey:date=* or check_date=* instead.
