clock (amenity=clock) also shows the current date

Key date=* is now used for:

  • 1. Date when related event happened (90% of 54000 values; values: one or several dates/years)
  • 2. Clock (amenity=clock) also shows the current date (10% of 54000 values; values no or yes)

I find this combination a bit unusual and would use a different key for the second usecase. datedisplay=* could be an alternative. --99 tabazan (talk) 10:19, 8 February 2026 (UTC)

I agree that this use of date isn't unambiguous. It would be date_display, I think, but neither yours nor this one are in use. --Chris2map (talk) 15:16, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
I'm not sure what percentage of uses are actually #1, as many uses may be for survey:date=*, check_date=* or source:date=*.
As this is hard to sort out (and keep clean), it might be better to use something different for #1 as well. historic:date=* could be an option.
That neither date_display nor historic:date=* are (much) used can be an advantage. --99 tabazan (talk) 15:38, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
There is (was) already a discussion about it: https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/maybe-we-should-deprecate-the-date-tag/135862/5 --99 tabazan (talk) 20:30, 8 February 2026 (UTC)
