This key is used in 3 ways:
- to specify whether passengers are carried on a railway route, with values yes / no
- to specify the extent which is served by a passenger railway route with national / regional / suburban / local / etc.
- rarely, as an access key for water based transport, with yes / no / designated
It is a property tag added to a primary feature tag: railway=*
or route=*
mapped as ways or relations.
