오픈 히스토리컬 맵 (OpenHistoricalMap, OHM)은 오픈스트리트맵 (OSM) 소프트웨어를 기반으로 오픈소스 유저 편집용 역사 지도를 구축하기 위한 장입니다. 이 프로젝트의 목표는 세계에서 가장 방대하고 상세한 시대별 지도를 만드는 것입니다. 현존하는 고지도와 역사 지도를 취합해서 하나로 묶는 것과 다름없습니다. OSM이 해안선이나 행정경계, 건물, 도로, 명소 등을 그려나가는 데 있어 최적의 수단이 되었듯이, OHM도 지리적 기반의 지물들을 그려나가는 데 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 거기서 더 나아가 역사적 변화, 사건, 인물, 동적 지물까지도 다룰 수 있도록 추후 내지는 추가적인 지원을 할 수 있을 겁니다.

OHM의 기여자는 기존 오픈스트리트맵 기여자는 물론, 학술 데이터셋 제공자, 관련 역사학회와 역사학자, 디지털 인문계 학생과 교수진, 개방형 데이터를 제공할 수 있거나 취미로 삼으시는 분들, 그리고 그밖에 지도 데이터를 다루시는 분들까지 누구든 될 수 있습니다. OHM 프로젝트의 기반 그 자체가 된 OSM의 풍부한 소프트웨어와 툴 개발에 많은 시간과 노력을 투자한 수많은 개발자 분들을 생각하지 않는 것은 아니지만, 원론적인 선에서 OHM의 직접적인 '기여자'로는 포함되지 않습니다.

While mapping history, we must all remember the biases and perspectives of the mappers when they portrayed indigenous lands and people. When using technology, we must all remember the biases inherent not just in our sources, but in our tools, our taxonomies, and our perspectives. The OHM Community asks all of its participants to honor and respect the history of indigenous people, to recognize that a place's history rarely began with exploration or colonial settlement, and to be open to questions about inclusivity.

태그하기

오픈스트리트맵 (OSM)의 태그 모델과 방식을 익혀두신 분이라면 이곳에서도 쉽게 적응하실 수 있습니다. OHM의 태그는 전반적으로 OSM과 동일합니다. 다만 date (날짜) 같은 일부 태그는 OSM에서는 없을 수도 있는 반면에 OHM에서 훨씬 중요하게 취급되므로 알아두실 필요가 있습니다.

OHM Life Cycle 태그는 Open Historical Map/Tags/LifeCycle에서 제안 형태로 논의가 진행되고 있습니다. 이외의 date namespace나 lifecycle prefix와 같은 옛 제안은 더 이상 추천하지 않습니다.

OHM에서 고지도 따라 그리기

  1. 따라 그릴 좋은 지도를 마련해 봅시다. 기여자들이 제보해 주는 이곳에서 필요한 지도를 찾아볼 수도 있습니다.
  2. 내가 추가할 지도의 저작권이 문제가 없는지를 확인합시다.
  3. 지도 파일을 위키미디어 커먼즈에 업로드해 줍시다. 이때 지도 틀을 써야 합니다. {{map}}을 함께 입력하여 "author" (저자), "source" (출처), "description" (설명) 등의 변수란을 채워줍시다. 업로드시 기본으로 붙어 있는 "{{Information" 문구를 "{{map"로 바꿔버려도 상관은 없습니다.
  4. "Georeference the map in Wikimap Warper" 버튼 (위치는 예시 참고)을 클릭해 MapWarper를 이용하여 고지도를 제자리에 배치해 봅시다.
    1. "Rectify" 탭을 클릭하여, (반드시) 3개 이상의 점을 추가해둡니다. 배치를 실행 후 오차가 나는지 체크해 줍시다. 오차가 난다면 자기가 쓸만할 수준에 도달할 때까지 점 위치를 고쳐줍니다. (오차범위는 여러분이 활용하는 지도 축적에 따라 다릅니다. 오차범위가 100m 이상이라면 건물 매핑에는 부적절할 수 있습니다.)
    2. "Export" 탭으로 가서 타일 URL을 복사합니다. ("Tiles (Google/OSM scheme): http://warper.wmflabs.org/maps/tile/3274/{z}/{x}/{y}.png" 하는 식으로 되어 있습니다) JOSM 활용 시, "JOSM OpenStreetMap Editor"를 오른쪽 클릭하여 URL을 복사합니다.
  5. JOSM을 켜고 지도를 불러옵니다 (Edit->Preferences->WMS->+WMS 순으로 진행, WMS 레이어 추가). 아니면 온라인 iD 에디터에서 지도를 불러옵니다 (Background Settings -> Custom 순, warper에서 내보낸 PNG 레이어를 복사 붙여넣기). 불러오고 나면 편집 화면상에 해당 고지도가 띄워져서 따라그릴 수 있게 됩니다!
  6. (JOSM인 경우) 서버 URL을 http://www.openhistoricalmap.org/api/로 바꿔줍니다.

지도 활용

https://www.openhistoricalmap.org 은 사용자의 움직임에 즉각 반응하는 인터랙티브형 지도입니다. 상세 지도를 보려면 화면 확대, 특정 시점의 지도를 보시려면 하단의 바를 좌우로 조정하여 시간을 맞추세요. Nominatim이 후원하는 상단의 검색창은 지도상의 모든 지물을 대상으로 시대를 가리지 않고, 온 역사를 통틀어 동시 검색할 수 있습니다.

위키백과의 장소나 사건 문서를 보면 상단 우측 끝에 지리 좌표를 표시해 두고 있습니다. 이 좌표 링크는 GeoHack 툴 화면으로 연결되며, 구글맵이나 네이버맵 등의 여러 가지 온라인 지도 서비스 상의 해당 좌표로 연결해 줍니다. 그 중에는 오픈히스토리컬맵으로 연결되는 링크도 있습니다.

데이터 이용

오픈히스토리컬맵의 데이터는 여러 수단으로 이용하실 수 있습니다.

최소 스케일로는 JOSM을 통해 데이터를 다운로드하실 수 있습니다. 대용량 데이터나 넓은 범위의 스케일은 두가지 방법이 존재합니다.
