This OpenHistoricalMap project aims for the historical coverage of the german Autobahn system as part of the german highway system.
Tagging
This section describes the standardization desired for this project. Listed below is a minimal set of tags. Additional tags can be added, as appropriate, but mappers should feel comfortable moving on if these have been included as a first pass.

Relations
When should segments be added to an Autobahn route relation?
- Not until they have been designated as an Autobahn with
Key:ref. The current "Bundesautobahn" system only applies since 1975-01-01. - East German motorways between 1974 and 1990-10-02 with
Key:official_ref. All relations since 1990-10-03 follow the same criteria as West German ones.
When should relations be created?
- For each segment, for each time period. For example, A 1 (Schleswig-Holstein), A 20 (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).
- You can then group each segment into a Bundesautobahn 1 relation or a Bundesautobahn 20. Short motorways which cross state lines only need this relation
- All route relations should be grouped into a chronology relation

Important dates
Here are some dates, where renumbering took place in the whole system
- 1971-07-01: Internal numbering scheme launched in West Germany
- 1974: Internal numbering scheme launched in East Germany
- 1975-01-01: New numbering scheme in West Germany launched. Numbers are displayed for users.
- 1990-10-03: German reunification. East Germany (and West Berlin!) adopts new numbering scheme.
- 1992-04-01: Only one number per motorway section is now allowed.
