Fort William walking & cycling wayfinding network

Adding the signed Fort William cycle wayfinding network to OSM as route relations over existing ways. Manual editing, one account, no import.

Goals

Six colour-coded routes are signed on the ground in Fort William but are not in OSM. This activity adds them as route=bicycle relations carrying the refs, names and colours shown on the signs, and maps the fingerposts as information=guidepost nodes.

Background

Installed July 2026: six colour-coded routes, roughly 20 miles, Corpach to Upper Achintore and Torlundy to Glen Nevis. Directional fingerposts at numbered junctions, coloured markers on lamp posts between them.

Scope

In scope: route relations over existing ways, and guidepost nodes for the signs.

Out of scope: anything not signed on the ground (state=proposed); import of geometry from any dataset; changes to way classification, access tags or alignment.

Ways will be split where a route starts, ends or turns part-way along one. Splits only, no alignment or tag changes, noted in the changeset comment.

Timeframe

September 2026, about two weeks.

Data sources

The signage on the ground, surveyed by us. All changesets carry source=survey. No Ordnance Survey, Google or other third-party data.

Tools

JOSM and iD. No bots, scripts or conflation tools.

Per guidepost node: tourism=information, information=guidepost, bicycle=yes.

Open questions

  1. cycle_network: GB:Marked Fort William is a placeholder. It names the contractor rather than the place, and contains spaces. GB:Fort_William, GB:Highland:Fort_William or omitting the key may be better.
  2. operator: Marked (built it), HITRANS (owns the scheme) or The Highland Council (roads authority). We lean HITRANS.
  3. Walking routes: cycle relations only for now. Are parallel route=foot / network=lwn relations wanted?
  4. Colour: colour=* hex, colour names, or osmc:symbol=*?
  5. Guideposts: are several dozen nodes useful or clutter?
  6. Where these routes overlap existing lcn tags or relations, we will ask before changing anything we did not add.

Changeset comments, the forum thread, this page's talk page, or an OSM note. We will reply within two working days while editing is ongoing, and will fix or revert anything wrong.

Reporting

On completion: dates, relation IDs, guidepost count, any tagging changed after feedback, and any issues raised. We will keep the relations in step with the signage as it changes, and will say so here if we stop.
