This proposal intends to introduce the waterworks=* key as it is related to [facilities]. Some new keys and values will be created to classify facilities where water is pumped, processed, treated and provided to end consumers. Waterworks facilities to be covered in this proposal are:

Potable water treatment plants
Wastewater plants
Storage facilities and others.

The since abandoned proposal, Proposed features/water network, while not addressing the same scope of keys, tags and values, does provide some good insight into what people have already thought about when proposing features relating to waterworks related.

Proposal

It is proposed to use a new waterworks=* key on nodes, ways and areas to describe and categorize facilities related to the pressurization, treatment, conveyance and storage of water.

This proposal affects a slew of key and tags that are currently in use under various kinds of categories.

The waterworks=* key may be a replacement to the existing keys in use for various waterworks features, e.g. making man_made=water_tower into waterworks=water_tower. Another possibility may be to make man_made=water_tower into man_made=water_tower, waterworks=yes*.

Rationale

The proposed key will categorize the currently scattered methods for describing facilities that are critical to any and all kinds of water processes.

Tagging

Add the key waterworks, to a node, way or area associated with a water facility. The exact keys and tags affected by this change are listed in the affected pages section.

One method of applying of this key is currently under consideration.
