Definition

The entrance=* describes the point where you can go into a building or enclosed area (as a zoo, theme park etc). It differs between its importance or type of use.

This tag deprecates building=entrance. But could be used in coexistence during conversion.

Tagging

Key Value Element Comment Rendering Photo
entrance yes An entrance exists at this position. There are 2.7m instances as of 25 Oct 2025; this is the most prevalent key-value pair.
entrance main The main entrance of a building or enclosed area, where most people can go inside. A shopping mall has often more than one. There are 901,709 instances as of 25 Oct 2025; this is the second most prevalent key-value pair.
entrance service A backdoor to a building or enclosed area often only for employees or for delivering. There are 68,284 instances as of 22 Oct 2011; this is the third most prevalent key-value pair.
entrance exit It is not an entrance, nor entrance-exist, but instructs or only allows one-way passing: for going out of a building. Often found at the enclosed ticket halls/foyers to attractions such as a stadium, a one-way-circuit or higher security shop, a museum or popular library (bibliotheque).
entrance emergency An emergency exit is a one-way out of a building in case of fire. It is often combined with a fire alarm box.

Please use the access=* values to describe who is allowed to enter.

  • access=yes The public has an official, legally-enshrined right of access.
  • access=delivery Access only for delivering goods to or from a customer.
  • access=private Access only with key or keycard.
  • access=no Access is not allowed.

Use wheelchair=yes to describe the entrance possibilities for a wheelchair user.

I propose those logos for tag's values :

entrance=yes,main,service,...

entrance=exit

entrance=emergency

entrance=noexit (proposed for entrance only, without exit possibility)

entrance=* can live in coexistence without any problems. But for new taggings you should use entrance=* instead of building=entrance.--vsandre 13:26, 14 October 2011 (BST)
Karlsruhe schema (addr=*) does not require any other tags on address nodes. Have a look at Vienna - whole city is covered in addr:=* nodes without any other tags. --Komяpa 08:53, 13 October 2011 (BST)
  • Error creating thumbnail: I oppose this proposal. GaM "building=entrance should NOT be deprecated. It used as address holder somewhere in Germany and Russia" +1 07:20, 13 October 2011 (BST)
So what? Also entrance=* can be used as "address holder". I myself, in Italy, I'm using building=entrance with a addr:housenumber=*, and I don't see any reason why entrance=* can't be used with that. --Hanska 08:15, 13 October 2011 (BST)
My opinion entrance=* key should expand value of building=entrance --GaM 08:41, 13 October 2011 (BST)

It's not a problem to add and document some values for the tag later, in the same manner as we extend "amenity=*", "shop=*", "craft=*" and many others tags. --Surly 16:14, 21 October 2011 (BST)
I wonder why it is not possible to do it right from the beginning, just imagine mall, residential (multiple types), office, and craft buildings, and list the entrances one can think of. I feel that somebody just wants to rush with this instead of taking time to resolve the matters brought up? Ij 20:41, 22 October 2011 (BST)
Really? There are 100k+ building=entrance. I've collected plenty (more than the top 1 entry there) and honestly don't know which one to select for residential building entrances but it seems that there's no interest in standardizing them until some undefined moment later? Why not now? Should I just select one I prefer for residential staircases and terraced entrances, and make your "evidence" obsolete? ;-) Ij 20:41, 22 October 2011 (BST)
I'm supporting an inclusive approach (both formally accepted). You are talking from the point of view of exclusivity (one or the other). Which do you prefer? --Ceyockey 16:20, 23 October 2011 (BST)

  • Error creating thumbnail: I approve this proposal. except extrance=exit which I oppose because it mixes different meanings. Better would be something like entrance_direction=in/out/both where both is the default. --Fkv 18:56, 24 October 2011 (BST)

Note that the tag entrance may be usefull when generating Garmin maps with mkgmap and option add-pois-to-areas. The thread Commit:_r2050:_Add_option_pois-to-area-placement_to configure_the_placement_of_POIs_created_from_areas can help you for configuring mkgmap appropriately.
