Wikidata

A  fortress is a heavily fortified structure with military use. A difference between a fortress and a  fort is that fortresses provide permanent residence, whereas forts in most cases do not.

How to map

Set a node at the center of the fortress or draw an area along its outline.

Tag with historic=castle and castle_type=fortress.

If the fortress has a  moat around it, map the outline of the moat and tag it with natural=water + water=moat.

Tags to use in combination

  • name=* - name of fortress
  • start_date=* - year completed
  • ruins=yes - set this tag when the fortress is a ruin, that means if only remains of buildings without roof or at least some walls exist. (Don't use historic=ruins anymore).
