A fortress or fortified settlement is a heavily fortified structure with military use. A difference between a fortress and a fort is that fortresses provide permanent residence, whereas forts in most cases do not.
How to map
Set a node at the center of the fortress or draw an area along its outline.
Tag with historic=castle and castle_type=fortress.
If the fortress has a moat around it, map the outline of the moat and tag it with natural=water + water=moat.
