A hogback is a gravemarker used between the 10th and 12th centuries in North England and to a lesser extent with typological differences in Scotland, Ireland (one known example) and Wales (one known example). The name derives from the similarity of the first described examples to the back of a pig, but some are not curved at the top. They resemble longhouses and might mean to depict houses for the dead.
How to map
Set a
node at the current location of the hogback and add historic=hogback as a minimum. In Cornwall, they are referred to as "coped stones", so add hogback=coped_stone for those. Add the following tags as appropriate:
| tag | example | explanation |
|---|---|---|
name=* |
Govan Stone 2 | The academic or local name of the stone, NOT name=Hogback, because that is a classification, not a name to help it differentiate from other hogbacks.
|
moved=* |
yes | Indicate with "yes", when this hogback was moved from its original location, for example if it is now in a museum. If it is believed to be in its original location, leave the tag out as a default. |
indoor=* |
yes/ no |
Indicate whether the hogback is within a building. If so, that implies moved=yes.
|
access=* |
yes/ private/ customers etc |
Indicate whether the access is restricted in some way. |
fee=* |
yes/ no |
Indicate whether you have to pay to see the hogback. |
collection |
yes | to indicate whether it is part of a collection (in a museum or as part of a group in a church) |
material=* |
granite | Type of stone it is made of, "stone" is implied, because they are all made of some type of stone. |
replica=yes |
replica=yes |
Please mark, if the hogback is a cast or other form of replica. |
length=* |
1.8 | length (in meters) of the stone, if you can find out |
width=* |
0.5 | width (in meters) of the stone, if you can find out |
height=* |
0.8 | height (in meters) of the stone, if you can find out |
wikidata=* |
Q136659904 | Wikidata identifier for this specific stone, if available. If it is not, consider creating a Wikidata entry for it. |
