This tag is used to identify historic features which are in ruins.
It is most commonly used in conjunction with the historic=* key. This can be used to identify the type of structure which is in ruins: historic=castle, ruins=yes
For most other objects the use of the lifecycle prefix ruins:, eg ruins:building=yes should be preferred.
For ruined structures that have no historic importance it can also be used in conjunction with other tags, such as 'building'. For example: building=yes, ruins=yes, but it's better to use building=ruins and abandoned:building=yes in this case.
- Discouraged notice : This usage of adding ruins=yes is discouraged by some people as it confuses some applications that mistake ruined building for the operational thing. As ever in OpenStreetMap, you are free to tag as you like, but you can read further here to make your own opinion : here or there.
In some cases the value of the "ruins" tag has been used to provide additional information in the form ruins=tower. See discussion page for proposals to extend this option.
