Table tennis or  ping-pong is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth using a table tennis racket. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.

How to map

As a node placed in the centre of the tennis table or group of tables. As a closed way placed on the outside edge of the tennis table or group of tables. Add the tags leisure=pitch + sport=table_tennis.

Tags used in combination

These tags can be used to describe the properties of the pitch in more detail.

Keys that have default values should be used only if the actual value is different to the default value.

Tagging scheme
Key Values Default value Meaning Notes
capacity=* numeric (integer) 1 number of tables only use if several tables are mapped as one object
material=* concrete, wood undefined material of the table
height=* numeric 0.76 height of the top of the table in metres Default is the ITTF standard.
length=* numeric 2.74 long edge of the table in metres Default is the ITTF standard.
width=* numeric 1.52 short edge of the table in metres Default is the ITTF standard.
incline=* yes, no, 2%, 5%, ... no Does the table have an incline? If so, how much? Measure in percent.
bounce=* percentage 77% fraction of its dropping height that a standard table tennis ball bounces back Default is ITTF standard. Ideally measured if dropped from 30cm.
pitch:net=* yes, no undefined Is there a net present (or available)?
pitch:net:material=* metal, fabric undefined material/type of the net
pitch:net:height=* numeric 0.15 height of the net above the table Default is ITTF standard.
pitch:net:overhang=* numeric 0.15 lateral overhang of the net beyond the table Default is ITTF standard.
playability=* excellent, good, intermediate, ... undefined condition of the table See below for details.

Playability

The playability tag can be used to describe the quality of the table.

Values for playability
Value Enjoyment Condition Semi-objective measure
excellent Unimpaired enjoyment. Competition-like: sharp edges, completely smooth surface, no damage. Can be played for a whole day without any stroke being affected by impurities of the table.
good Almost undisturbed enjoyment. Smoothness slightly impaired globally or a few very localized damages. Less than 1 stroke per 11-point match affected.
intermediate Enjoyment moderately disturbed. Partly damaged edges, locally unsmooth surface, and/or moderately damaged net. Between 1 and 10 strokes per 11-point match are altered.
bad Enjoyment considerably curbed. Substantial damage affects almost each rally.
very_bad Not enjoyable if your intention is to play anything similar to table tennis.

May be enjoyable for some fun-variants, though.

At least one of these:
  • Outcome of the game is almost random due to the condition of the table.
  • Most rallies are ended prematurely due to the condition of the table.
  • One side of the pitch gives the respective player a considerable advantage of their opponent.
horrible Not enjoyable at all. At least one of these:
  • Outcome of the game is completely random due to the condition of the table.
  • Virtually all rallies are ended prematurely due to the condition of the table.
  • One side of the pitch gives the respective player a game-determining advantage of their opponent.
very_horrible Not enjoyable at all. Substantial parts of the table not suitable for playing at all or missing. More than 25% of the table surface are missing or absolutely unplayable.
unplayable A game will not take place. Table unsuited for table tennis.
