The traffic rules on Belgian motorways are fully determined at the level of the federal government. Therefore one national value for zone:traffic=* is sufficient. This is unlike non-motorways, where, since the Sixth Belgian State Reform, the regional governments can change the default speed limits.

All roads with zone:traffic=BE:motorway are outside the built-up area. As far as known, motorways inside the built-up area do not exist in Belgium. If they would exist, the default traffic rules would be contradictory: §21.2 specifies a default minimum speed of 70 km/h while §11.1 specifies a default maximum speed of either 50 km/h (Flemish/Walloon Region) or 30 km/h (Brussels-Capital Region).
