Bike paths
I'm interested in some standards for bike paths in Melbourne. Examples are:
- bike paths
- shared footways
- on-road bike routes
- rail trails
Thermal 2007-06-19

unwayed segments & Coastlines
Quite a few of these are in australia, and appear to be someone drawing coastlines and rivers. I started just trying to help out by converting them to ways, and marking them the same way as the other sections.
However, the traces are crap. Sorry to whoever put them in, but they don't even remotely follow the coastline. The satellite imagery is much better than the jagged chunky lines that someone has drawn "along" the riverbanks. (See the upper reaches of the brisbane river particularly)
I'm tempted to just delete the ways I've converted, and leave it a clean slate for someone to come along and do a nicer job tracing, but I don't live in Brisbane anymore, and I'm not actively mapping there, so I thought I'd put up some comments here first instead.

- I was under the impression that these coastlines were from an automatic import of coastline data. I agree the accuracy is shocking, especially up the Parramatta river in Sydney. --Brainwad 10:21, 7 October 2007 (BST)
- I guess you're probably looking at PGS import data. I noticed rivers in India with poor accuracy which I put down to changes in the position of the river since the data was created a long time ago (and flooded valleys etc) But maybe it is just inaccurate. We can improve this gradually by hand. It can be very jaggedy, and is often improved by removing lots of nodes to make a straight line -- Harry Wood 11:39, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Australian map & GPS companies
I got a query from someone about loading OpenStreetMap onto a Pheonix satnav unit. Looks like Pheonix [1] is an aussie company using maps from Sensis, a wing of Telstra who sell satnav maps on whereis.com. Can't work out if they have their own file format, or just offer maps in various formats required by various devices. No mention on the wiki here, so I'm guessing nobody's done anything super-in-depth like reverse engineering the file formats for these things. -- Harry Wood 11:53, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
tectonic drift
Recent news articles are reporting an update to the Geocentric Datum of Australia, to account for tectonic drift of 7cm per year: [2]. I suppose over a period of 10 or 20 years, the drift may become apparent on OpenStreetMap too? Ghouston (talk) 23:49, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- As long as the new datum used in official geodesic databases of Australia are is not changed (and data published to synchronize it with the worldwide WGS84 data, we should not change anything.
- However the difference will become notable when aerial orthophotography will be updated to take into account the new geodesy (but updates to official land survey data will take many years to be synchronized.
- For now we should not anticipate this change (there will probably be a new triangulation performed and a set of core survey points updated, and finally all landuse databases will need to be updated to use the new datum (with will NOT have the same EPSG identifier: the new identifier will help knowing if the data is corrected or not, otherwise it will be impossible to have coherent synchronization with the WGS84 datum, which does NOT drift anywhere for tectonic movements but uses very few reference points (basically the poles for fixing the directions of longitudes and latitudes, and a point on its origin meridian -- which is not exactly the Greenwich point, because of an historical computation error when the GPS system was launched and made public.) 01:33, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
Removing "WikiProject" prefix
Hi, I am Daniel, from Spain. I would like to change the name of the wiki pages related to the Australia mapping project to remove the "Wikiproject" prefix following the pages name conventions.
The name of the pages related to the Australia mapping project would be "Australia" (name of place) instead of "Wikiproject Australia", as recommended by the wiki conventions. It is a change that I have already made in United States, Canada, Spain, and all Spanish-speaking countries on this Wiki, consulting with their communities beforehand. Hard work but good results.
I could make the necessary changes, no problem, and also add the Country template to the Australia project page, although this change is optional.
