ref vs ref:openplaques vs openplaques:id

Shouldn't it be ref:openplaques=1536 instead? --Ajank 01:06, 13 June 2012 (BST)

I'm with Ajank on that. It is definitely a 'ref' value --Jnicho02 11:53, 14 June 2012 (BST)
I don't agree with using ref. ref=* is used to relate to something identifiable on the ground, such as the ref of a road, cycle route or bus route. These would be displayed on signs. The openplaques id is purely internal to their site and not verifiable on the ground. Chillly 12:43, 14 June 2012 (BST)

There is some good discussion of this issue by Chris Hill at http://chris-osm.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01/plaques-blue-or-not.html --Jnicho02 11:53, 14 June 2012 (BST)

I have been using openplaques:id=*. This resonates with the openplaques site as they use a similar scheme for linking to photos of the plaque in flickr using flickr's machine tags. Using the 'plaque' rather than 'id' doesn't get the point across that it is the id on the openplaques site. (Chris Hill) Chillly 12:43, 14 June 2012 (BST)

I think openplaques:id=<ID> is also what I've used a couple of times. Just seems to read a bit better. — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 04:07, 15 June 2012 (BST)
OpenPlaques also has IDs for subjects (usually people). Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 14:25, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
That is true, but the primary object in OpenPlaques is the plaque, and the identifier called 'id' is used to refer to it. Jnicho02 (talk) 08:22, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

ref=* is now widely used as a namespace for external references (the majority of which will not be distinguishable on-the-ground). openplaques:id was a reasonable choice at the time, but I now believe that ref:openplaques is more the OSM style -- Jnicho02 (talk) 08:11, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

I agree that ref:openplaques is that way to go. There are many more reference IDs popping up, think openbenches, HMDB, etc. and followign this current paradigm each one would have a unique key. Whereas following the paradigm in ref=* allows it to be easily expandable. It is not pleasant to change courses mid-stream but I think it is the best moving forward.
