What the difference between "yes" and "welcome" ? Rafmar (talk) 13:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have removed "welcome", since that didn't make sense. I have also added "brand" and "only".--Pbb (talk) 19:05, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
In wiki to be mentioned that this key shouldn't be used alone, but always with "shop". --Plamen (talk) 05:56, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

The callout box on Key:repair says: "...It's not explained why shop=* + repair=* isn't sufficient."
Since this talk page is linked from that article, here is a direct explanation: shop=* + repair=* cannot express explicit negatives.
Consider a shop that repairs mountain bikes and road bikes, but explicitly does not repair e-bikes. With repair=*, the best available encoding is repair=mountain_bike;road_bike. That leaves e-bikes indistinguishable from "not surveyed" or "unknown," because the absence of a value carries no information. Adding repair=no is not an option, since it conflicts with the positive values already present.
A =yes/=no value on a namespaced key resolves this by making each (service, good) pair its own tag, e.g. service:mountain_bike:repair=yes, service:road_bike:repair=yes, and service:ebike:repair=no. A mapper has then positively recorded that e-bikes are not repaired, and a data consumer can tell "no" apart from "unknown."

- I already recorded
service:*:repair=*there. Almost all*:repair=*are not about sub-modes, but broader modesmotorcycle:repair=*fromshop=motorcycleetc. It's exactly not explained whyrepair=*isn't sufficient for these. Kovposch (talk) 05:27, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Kovposch how would you suggest tagging the example I gave (a shop that repairs mountain bikes and road bikes, but explicitly does not repair e-bikes) without using namespaces? -- Osmedit (talk) 12:16, 5 October 2026 (UTC)
