How about a column on the table about the coverage of each map? For instance, I loved the idea of ÖPNV-Karte (just an example) but they don't render South America data. --Nighto 12:26, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

good idea but how to realize? Enumerating what is covered or what is not? --!i! 16:06, 8 August 2010 (BST)
What about a new column with something like this : Thumb and this Thumb. Yeah, I know, that's quite a huge work, and not every one will make the effort, but that was just an idea ;-) sletuffe 23:13, 18 August 2010 (BST)

Splitt into sub parts

What about splitting the table up e.g. one part for information centered, the next for artistic centered pages and the last one for tools? --!i! 11:35, 7 August 2010 (BST)

Good idea, I think e.g. QA should get its own section with things like duplicate nodes map, unmapped places map and Skobbler Bugs (OT: I am missing the access map an the OpenGastroMap too). Perhabs we can have a section for multiple platforms like browser, iPhone, Android and webOS (Minimap and MapTool) --DINENISO 13:09, 8 August 2010 (BST)
Ok i will do this job. But actually I think 3 sections are enough otherwise it will be cluttered --!i! 14:58, 8 August 2010 (BST)
The table is sortable so it would be enought to create a new column with this unsharp categorisation. --Kolossos 11:57, 9 August 2010 (BST)
Nice idea! think this will do it! --!i! 12:23, 9 August 2010 (BST)
I'm not completly happy with the column sorting, there is now a huge list of materials (which is very good !) but it's hard to find what one search without reviewing every description. A "by target" (browser, gps unit, smart phone). A "by theme" (outdoors sports, place finding/routing, accessibility, general purpose) would be excellent... but is a wiki the best tool for that ? ;-) sletuffe 23:32, 18 August 2010 (BST) (Any way, congratulation for the enormous clean up !) sletuffe 23:32, 18 August 2010 (BST)
Thank you very much :) I agree it is not the best sollution but this might be a result of the mass of items. I have no idea, your suggestion sounds good! But altering this table is a mass... For Software we go the opposite way, we tag on the single wiki pages of the Software tools using a template and try to collect all together using some kind of crawler+report generator. But this won't work here.
But we might use an template to make altering more easy and split up between data and representation?
Ended, I tried a few edits with terrible pain (I'm not that good at wiki tables), if I would add a column; I'd probably hang myself with a rope long before any results ;-). The template idea+categories on every tools page sounds promissing, but I have no idea how we could then construct an automatic, sortable list from that ! (is it even possible ?) I'll leave the answer to wiki experts... sletuffe 13:39, 20 August 2010 (BST)
It's not as hard as you think :) Please have a look at the first table at this page: Software/Desktop It is generated using templates which allows a naming of attributes and easily extending it in one single template: Template:Sw. Would this be better usable to you? If so please make suggestions for the new columns and it's values--!i! 14:50, 20 August 2010 (BST)
That looks extremely good, I'll be happy to help create the template, add it to has many osm tool. Let's try that ? like here Template:obs sletuffe 15:11, 30 September 2010 (BST)
Looks like I'm completely lost with templates and need a bit of help ;-) sletuffe 15:30, 30 September 2010 (BST)
I would be glad to help you, but unfortunatly I have a lack of time ATM. Will try it next week --!i! 20:32, 30 September 2010 (BST)
No problem, there's no hurry. (PS: you kept posting this comment in "minor edit") sletuffe 09:15, 1 October 2010 (BST)
I finaly changed over to a template based approach. Would be nice if you can help me in finding good categories, so we can split up the big table into smaller ones. This will simplify the editing process and allows easier navigation as already mentioned. I created a few categories, further ideas are:
* specific (focused on a single product or else)
* historic
No problems, I'm here to help, where can I find the template you've done (if it's allready up) ? My categories idea were : QA (quality Assurance tools)/ Outdoor_maps (Slippy map for out door sports)/ Fun (Funny maps based on OSM). Also I think we could create, if possible, different levels of category such as purpose (who is it for), target (what software/hardware is it for, such as for browser, for GPS devices, for desktop apps) and coverage zone sletuffe 16:18, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes it's already online and I converted this page already. Feel free to change the categories as you like. I made a few first one to split up the big ugly to edit table. --!i! 16:43, 3 November 2010 (UTC)
In fact, when you mentionned Software I thought you would propose doing the same thing : i.e adding a template on every osm based service page, and the global list whould automatically be constructed as needed by a magic template system I'm not aware of. But after a little more readings, what I wanted might only be done by a bot such as : User:TTTBot. Whouldn't that be simpler to use such a mecanism ? sletuffe 19:06, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Nice idea, unfortunatly not every webservice has a own wiki page. I'm not sure if this is a good idea to create the stub pages just for a distributed list. Currently we splitted up the table which makes editing a lot easier and I hope people find faster their stuff or get a better overview. I will talk to Tordanik who maintaines the bot. But actually there are some requests on exteding it for Software so I guess you have to be patient. --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 20:15, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
If the only problem is that not every webservice has its own page, I can help create them and add the appropriate template with name, caterories, coverage, etc. But I understand that it might be a lot of work for the first step since you allready have done a huge clean up by splitting tables. sletuffe 10:37, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Neighbour projects

Is there any idea where we can list neighbour projects for example ? --!i! 21:25, 9 August 2010 (BST)

I cleaned up Related Projects for this link genre --!i! 06:24, 12 August 2010 (BST)

Isokron and PoiExport is missing, can I add this service (info from the OSM news) to the site or is this site only filled by a bot? --DINENISO 11:11, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

Would be great if you enter it. But I saw PoiExport already there ;) --!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 11:24, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I contacted the author cause this list should be for serices/maps that are generate out of OSM and have different map style. For just pages that use OSM as a backgroundmap, we try to use OSM Internet Links instead (as mentioned in the page header)--!i! This user is member of the wiki team of OSM 16:15, 8 June 2011 (BST)
Okay, thank you for clarifying this issue. :-) --SB79 17:22, 8 June 2011 (BST)
  • Why are pages such as Foursquare and Craigslist or applications such as Apple iPhoto not listed on this page? See [[1]].
As far as I know they just include OSM maps and put their own data on top - they don't really provide any service as such or implement additional unusual features. Therefore I think they are better described as OSM users, not as providers of OSM-based map services, even though the distinction is a bit fuzzy. We have OSM Internet Links for websites using OSM, butit's not well maintained (especially the English page, there's somewhat more content on the German one). --Tordanik 11:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)
"Alphabetically sorted complete list of projects using especially data from OpenStreetMap. For any page using just the OSM Map see OSM Internet Links" so as Tordanik says, this is about services created out of OSM data and not just using it as background map :) --!i! Dead/currently down services

Some QA services are currently down/not up to date but still listed in the tables. Some having free material, they might just be waiting someone to take over. But I don't think this is the place to list tools that you have to spent hours to make work, but ready made services. Can I clean-up a bit what is not operational anymore ? sletuffe 14:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Go ahead. Thanks for cleaning up. Gnonthgol 16:13, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
alive again --Huskytreiber (talk) 10:21, 11 August 2013 (UTC)
Nice list of broken services, but I think you should be bold and clean them up from the main page... sletuffe 17:28, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
I have done my best to clean up the List of OSM based Services#Quality Assurance table, but that's a lot of work to check them one by one, and when service has moved sletuffe 17:28, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Jungle of service

In the jungle of all QA services, some are (arguably) better than others, how could we add some sort of popularity ? and is that interesting ? sletuffe 14:10, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Template for translation

IMHO the tables should be templates since the translated versions lag behind. With this change untranslated services are stil displayed in englisch. --Jojo4u (talk) 08:04, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Are you planning to model this after the Map Features templates? Imo those are hard to expand, which might mean that fewer users can add entries. --Tordanik 11:22, 26 June 2015 (UTC)

Title of QA-section

With an edit in 2011 the title of the QA section was changed from "==Quality Assurance==" to "==Quality Assurance - OSM Tool==, is this really useful? I would like to change it back. What happens to eventual links to this section, will they be updated? Jojo4u (talk) 21:45, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Services no longer available ?

It seems the maps on BigTinCan Maps are no longer available.

The same for Kosmosnimki and Kosmosnimki OpenStreetMap render

First gives:

HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found
The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.""

Second gives:

HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error
The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.""

Should these items be removed ?

DiGro 2016-01-11 17:17 (UTC +1)

I recommend to use the wiki text attribute <s>XXX</s> to mark them as striked (XXX). When service is still not available in some weeks, then delete them. --Stephan75 (talk) 20:55, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
It may also be good to add the current date and a short comment. E.g.: "XXX (not working - error 404 - as of 2016-01-11)" --Aseerel4c26 (talk) 21:12, 11 January 2016 (UTC)

Cleanup of General category needed

When I added the NewsHereNow project to the "General" category on this page I noticed that someone had inserted the code for the beginning of a comment without terminating that comment. This mistake has the effect of hiding lots of entries, up until a later comment terminates. I do not know which items should be hidden. It should be edited by someone who knows what that comment was intended to accomplish. Thanks. Cpsolver (talk) 18:58, 12 July 2018 (UTC)

Reorganize categories and services

I would like to give some love to this page because I want to pay tribute to the hard work of mappers, developers and other data consumers. All our contributions comes together on this page.

I have started to mark or remove services that are offline.

I would like to continue with:

  • Move servcies that are offline, but whose source code still exists, to the offline section (otherwise remove it)
  • Mark regional maps.
  • Add categorie for offline but source code still exists.
  • Reorganize the categories and services.
  • Add missing services...
  • Replace http with https where possible
  • Clean up names, replace domains/url with description from the website title.
  • Add missing screenshots.
  • Sorting the tables.
  • Extend template with "Coverage" and "Features" (e.g. Search, POI, Edit, Routing, 3D, ...)
  • Adjust Software, OSM Internet Links, Commercial OSM Software and Services, OSM-Apps

Help and inputs are welcome. :) ToastHawaii (talk) 17:42, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

+1, thanks in advance.
Sorting the tables would be nice, too. --Skyper (talk) 12:43, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
@Skyper: Thanks, for the input and for replacing http with https urls. I am beginning to understand how much more work can be done. ^^' --ToastHawaii (talk) 14:05, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
Yes, these tables are never ending stories. Once the clean up, adjustments and recategorizing is done, missing services need to be found and you usually end up in editing/creating the separate page for each service, too. --Skyper (talk) 15:05, 15 August 2020 (UTC)
I've done little updates on QA and was wondering if it is better to split off from "Genre" the covered area into an own column. Additionally, the last section about "Offline" could have the same subsections as above. --Skyper (talk) 10:05, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
Thank you again for supporting the cleanup. :D I agree that the covered area belongs in its own column. I don't know how a wiki template can be extended or created. I am not sure about the division of the offline section. I would not invest too much time in this section. There are other tasks which support others more after the completion. --ToastHawaii (talk) 13:32, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
Templates can be edited at their wiki pages, see the list of used templates in editing mode. But you are looking for a new column in the table definition. This should be possible by adding a new line !scope="col"| … in the table header and the new column name to every section header (separated with  !! ). --Skyper (talk) 17:14, 18 August 2020 (UTC)
I can see if I find some time the next days to add the new column. --Skyper (talk) 12:35, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, you were right about the template. Nevertheless, I've changed the template and added the new column. So far empty. --Skyper (talk) 15:29, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
We probably need a value for worldwide coverage, as, otherwise we will check them over and over again. Is there an established value? Is Worldwide ok? --Skyper (talk) 20:48, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
+1 for "Worldwide" --ToastHawaii (talk) 11:41, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
Actually, the tables are sortable, so only editors of the page will profit the most of sorting the source code. --Skyper (talk) 20:06, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

I am interested in User:TTTBot and Osm Software Catalog. Maybe there is an easy way to provide a website to make it easier to filter, sort and search the OSM based services and applications. --ToastHawaii (talk) 14:05, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

I thought about the format for the languages and came to the decision that a single {{#language:*|en}} for each language is probably the best. This is an international page in English and hopefully translation will pick up.
Another question is how many languages we want to list and if possible it might be smarter to link to the translation software for opensource services. --Skyper (talk) 18:33, 18 August 2020 (UTC)

I support the single {{#language:*|en}} approach.
I started to implement a OSM Apps Catalog, I use the information from the wiki. Having the full list of languages that is machine readable makes it possible to search for a specific language. --ToastHawaii (talk) 09:15, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
Nice, this is helpful in both ways. Did you add it to the page as service and as Link above the table? I guess, my question about the numbers is obsolete. --Skyper (talk) 12:35, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
I agree that if a app supports many languages, it may make sense not to list all languages. One approach could be to use {{#language:mul|en}} in this case (and the link to the translation software). --ToastHawaii (talk) 11:41, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
Nice, did not know this part of the template. If a link to the translation software or to a language overview on the website is possible, then it is the best alternative, as we do not have to care about updating the explicit languages, anymore. --Skyper (talk) 14:07, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
