Proposals

--V0174 19:35, 24 September 2010 (BST) Great that someone created this, I was looking for tag like this for a long time, because I mapped some historic mines near my town. I have some proposals for this tag (I hope they make sense, my English isn't perfect):

constructed=YYYY - when the adit was constructed (the construction began), similar to historical monuments

flooded=yes/no - when the adit is abandoned, it may be flooded by the underground water.

ruins=yes - if the mine is already destroyed or it's still in a good shape.

I also use historic=yes and access tags.

collapsed=yes/no/partly/complete

Depth?

Are we sure we want to use the tag depth=* to tag the legth of the adit?

I believe it is just copy/paste mistake and I would like to change it to length=*.

I think "depth" is used in the meaning of how deep into the mountain the mine extends, but I also think the term "length" is less confusing.

I agree that "depth" should be corrected to "length", as the tag definition for depth says it is about "how deep a feature is according to charted depth, measured in metres." and is giving the context of water depths. Looking at taginfo, most depth tags are associated with water features. The description of "depth" on the adit page says it is about "length", so clearly length=* should be the recommende tag (IMHO). --Dieterdreist (talk) 08:18, 11 May 2017 (UTC)

Tag only on nodes?

Why is the suggestion to add this only on nodes, and not on ways? Shouldn't the tag then be different, like "adit_portal"? I am aware that surveying underground structures is difficult, but it is sometimes possibile to get the data nonetheless (either from license compatible maps, or by doing a survey, etc.), so it shouldn't be completely rejected to map these as ways IMHO. --Dieterdreist (talk) 09:06, 15 May 2017 (UTC)

The key could be renamed to man_made=adit_entrance. See for reference the tagging of cave passages, as natural=cave on ways, and entrances as natural=cave_entrance on nodes. --Gormo (talk) 11:56, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Adits for non-mining purposes

There are adits for non-mining purposes, especially old air raid shelters and mushroom-growing facilities. I believe they should also be taggable as adits and propose to amend the article accordingly. --Gormo (talk) 09:23, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

From what I read in the internet, the term adit seems to only be used in the context of mining. I would guess those air raid shelters and mushroom growing facilities are indeed repurposed mining facilities. I propose to change "An adit is a (nearly) horizontal entrance to the underground, by which resources can be extracted or a mine can be entered, ventilated or drained of water. The visible portal of the adit is mapped as a node." to "An adit is a artificial, (nearly) horizontal entrance to the underground. Most adits are built as a means to extract resources, drain a mine of water or provide access to other parts of the mine. The visible portal of the adit is mapped as a node." (edits in italics). See, for reference, the article of the german wikipedia, which describes an adit as a means to access a Grubenbau, which is defined as "any subsurface cavity created by miners", regardless of purpose of said Grubenbau. --Gormo (talk) 11:49, 30 April 2018 (UTC)

Note: In civil engineering, "adit" refers to any horizontal subterreranean passageway, vis-a-vis "shaft", in tunneling. Only that in "everyday life", adits are more commonly known for mines. -- Kovposch (talk) 15:44, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
