Possible duplicate of marker=stone

Hello. I find this value redundant with marker=stone. marker=* was intended to hold the shape of a marker whatever its purpose can be. borderstone seem to mix several concepts (border/boundary and stone). What additional advantages does it bring over marker=stone? Fanfouer (talk) 22:46, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment. I wrote this documentation because I came across this tag in use in the database and noticed that it was undocumented, so I wanted to describe what is actually being used in the database.
That said, I generally agree with your point. The fact that an object marks a boundary should indeed be expressed by boundary=marker, while the physical form of the marker can be described with marker=stone. In this sense, borderstone mixes function (boundary) and form (stone) and does not seem to add clear advantages over the existing tags.
Since most usages of this tag appear to be in Poland, I can raise this topic on the Polish OSM Community forum to gather local feedback, if you think this would be useful. Depending on the outcome, this could eventually lead to a cleanup or retagging, which I can take care of. Kubahaha (talk) 20:45, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
