--Geri-oc (talk) 09:15, 21 June 2017 (UTC)

motorboat:rental or motorboat_rental

It is not clear whether it must be tagged motorboat:rental or motorboat_rental. The same applies to the other boot types. See the page amenity=boat_rental. The second type is applied much more frequently.

Please discuss the topic and then synchronize it. --geozeisig (talk) 05:19, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Proposal?

Before being documented out of the blue, perhaps this should be discussed in a proposal first?

There has been a proposal before, alas without the subtags: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Marine_shops

shop=chandler discouraged?

To just set something as discouraged unilaterally without prior discussion on mailing list/forum or not even the wiki talk page is pretty audacious.

I have removed this for now and encourage whoever put this there and created the wiki page as it looks now to put the topic of how to tag boat-(related) to public discussion if this hasn't happened yet or link to the discussion if this indeed happened. --Westnordost (talk) 19:02, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Please do not use boat=* to show what you can buy

Please do not use the boat-tag for "boat=* - Type of boat sold" (recently added to the wiki in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:shop%3Dboat&oldid=1967061).

boat=* is an access-tag (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:boat) and no tag to show what you can buy in a shop and taginfo (https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/boat) shows that boat=* it is used for access: over 98% of all boat-values are "yes"/"no". --Andreas Binder (talk) 14:31, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

You could use the sells tag. In it's original form it is like sells:tobacco=yes/no, sells:ice_cream=yes/no. Could also be used as a list: sells=sails;ropes;shoes --Dieterdreist (talk) 14:41, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, sell:* would be better than boat=*, because it has no conflict with an exisiting access tag. I think boat:type would be also ok. I would prefer last, because it is more documented in the wiki https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:boat:type or https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:shop%3Dboat, but I can live with other tags too, but boat=* is no good choice, to tell what you can buy.
More statistics: We have today 358 016 objects with boat=* in our osm database und as said over 98% of them has "yes"/"no" values because boat=* is an access tag. We have only 105 object (0.02% of all 358 016 boat=*-objects) that uses values with boat types:
a) cruise_vessel (count 34)
b) canoe (count 48)
c) kayak (count 13)
d) kayak;canoe (count 4)
e) cable ferry (count 2)
f) canoe;kayak (count 2)
g) motorboat (count 2)
Only two OSM-Objects from these 105 objects are used in combination with shop=* and on every of the two objects the boat=*-tag was added recently from the same mapper who added boat=* recently on the wiki of shop=boat. I hope the mapper will talk with us here, so we can find a suitable tag without conflicts. I sent a hint to this talk to the mapper...--Andreas Binder (talk) 15:15, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
Does anyone mind if I remove the recently added "boot=* Type of boat sold" from the wiki (because it conflicts with the access tag boat=*) until a suitable tag for the sold boat types is discussed and found? --Andreas Binder (talk) 16:24, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Please do it asap, the contested and conflicting usage of boat was neither discussed, voted, nor is it established. —-Dieterdreist (talk) 08:38, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Jeisenbe has done the removal of boat=*" in https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag:shop%3Dboat&oldid=1995271 Thank you --Andreas Binder (talk) 15:43, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
