Origin

This proposal is based on an ongoing discussion from the German forum. See http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=5630&p=1

See also Talk:Tag:tourism=camp_site#Further ideas

Idea

An annotation scheme shall be given to describe camping areas in more detail than currently possible. Thus a set of tags is proposed that can be used to provide more information than using tourism=camp_site alone.

It is proposed to create several objects for several amenities and group them using a relation. Statements which are valid for the whole site and of non-physical nature are to be tagged on the relation. General physical properties are to be tagged on the enclosing area, if existent. See Relations/Proposed/Site.

area=yes is implicit for enclosing way.

Tagging

In the thread in the forum the following tags were proposed. These need to be cleaned up and verified.

Whenever NUMBER is mentioned as a tag value it means that a numeric value shall be used instead.

Tags for whole camp site

This attributes are really new and should be tagged directly on the camp_site node/way.

tourism=camp_site Classifies the whole site as a camping area. To be used on relation (or enclosing area, if existent).

capacity:tents=yes/no/NUMBER, capacity:caravans=yes/no/NUMBER Available spaces to put tents or caravans

capacity:cabins=yes/no/NUMBER Cabins, apartments or houses to rent

scout=yes/no/boy/girl If the place is only for one gender

opening_hours=* Limitations on access to site. Can express daily opening hours, opening hours at specific days or season limits.

quiet_time=* A period when noise shall be avoided, usually during nights and lunchtime. Values should follow the conventions of opening_hours=*

payment:*=yes/no Specification of payment method like in amenity=vending_machine

power_supply=cee_17_blue Describing the power socket for. This means P+N+E,6h according to IEC60309 but see power_supply=* for other values.

naturism=yes/no/accepted/preferred Nude camping

minstay=*, maxstay=* The minimum and maximum permitted stay durations if limits are existent. Specify values such as minstay=1 night or maxstay=8 nights.

Already used tags

This attributes aren't new but should be listed here because they are useful to describe camp sites.

name=* The site's name

operator=* The site operator's name

wheelchair=yes/no If access is possible for wheelchair users. What about other disabilities?

internet_access=yes/no/terminal/wlan Terminals are to be tagged as separate nodes

website=* Address of the site's web site (containing prices, load, pictures, …)

phone=* Make sure to give numbers in a scheme that works globally. This tag was refused in a voting but is in heavy use nevertheless (Voting can be ignored as it is only an instrument to find consents in OSM. Despite the result a consent seems to be there.).

addr:street=*, addr:housenumber=* More general information addr=* and Proposed features/House numbers/Karlsruhe Schema

dog=yes/no, cat=yes/no, reptile=yes/no, horse=yes/no Indicate if animals are allowed on the site.

refugee=yes/no Spontaneous camp sites after disasters that need humanitarian aid. Not to be used for vacancies! See WikiProject_Haiti#Features for usage example.

Tags for separate objects

This attributes are duplicates cause they could be expressed by an separate node within the relation. This allows to mark the place structure. If the position of the objects is known, tag them as separate nodes. Otherwise the following tag can be given on the enclosing way (camp_site area).

waste_disposal=yes/no or amenity=waste_disposal Are place to bin your litter. Use waste=* to specify types of waste.

toilets=yes/no or amenity=toilets Availability of toilets

shower=yes/no/hot/cold or amenity=shower Availability of showers

drinking_water=yes/no or amenity=drinking_water If drinking water is available

waterway=water_point If refilling is available for campers/mobile homes.

washing_machine=yes/no Self-washing of cloths is available

dryer=yes/no A device to dry clothes is there

shop=laundry To wash clothes.

amenity=restaurant, amenity=fast_food These two should be united somehow.

leisure=beach_resort, sport=swimming Marks where swimming is possible

leisure=playground A area intended for playing children.

surface=* To specify surfaces of areas or ways

tourism=picnic_site A place to take a meal outside, usually a table and benches are provided

camp_site=reception The reception which is usually located at the camp site's entrance

tents=yes/no, caravans=yes/no, cabins=yes/no Marks areas on the site that can be used to put tents or caravans

amenity=parking For parking lots belonging to a site

Tagging ways on camp site

highway=path, foot=*, bicycle=*, motorcar=*, motorcycle=* Streets on site and their access restrictions. See also access=*

highway=service Streets intended for vehicles. These can also be used by pedestrians if not explicitly specified otherwise.

Tagging of lots

One might be interested in tagging individual lots. Lots means (in this context) the free spaces used to place 1 tent or 1 caravan. Create a point or a way and apply the following tags to do so:

camp_site=lot To mark to object as lot

lot:number=* To provide to used identifier. This is probably a number with similar semantics as house numbers.

lot:street=* If, and only if, there are non-official named streets within the camp site, use this value to provide the street name.

Tagging of relation

type=site It is a compound of several objects

site=camp_site It is a camp site

Put everything that is part of the site as members of the relation. Role names are not part of this proposal and should be left empty therefore.

Tagging Examples

Example 1

Simple camp site with shop
Camp site with convenience shop.

To be tagged on line enclosing the whole site. See green area in image.

Key Value Description
tourism camp_site It is a camp site
name Lakeside Example name
operator Max Mustermann Site owner's name
dog no No dogs are allowed on site

To be tagged on convenience store's node or way. See red area in image.

Key Value Description
shop convenience A shop selling basic items (like a small supermarket)
opening_hours Mo-Fr 09:00-16:00 Shop is open Monday till Friday from 09:00am until 04:00pm local time.
building yes Because the way should represent a building's outline

To be tagged on relation

Key Value Description
type site It is a site consisting of multiple objects
site camp_site It is a camping related site
name Lakeside Same as on polygon

Set the polygon (green area) and shop (red area) as members with empty roles.

Example 2

Complex camp site with child objects
Camp site with convenience shop, playground, different areas for tents and caravans, waste disposal, toilets, hot shower and a lake.

To be tagged on line enclosing the whole site. See green area in image.

Key Value Description
tourism camp_site It is a camp site
name Lakeside Example name
operator Max Mustermann Site owner's name
dog no No dogs are allowed on site
drinking_water yes Refilling with drinking water is available for caravans
naturism accepted Nude camping is allowed, although not encouraged
washing_machine yes A washing machine is available on site but its position is not know at the moment and therefore not tagged a node.
power_supply cee_17_blue Blue 3-pin socket with 230V is available

To be tagged on convenience store's node or way. See red area in image.

Key Value Description
shop convenience A shop selling basic items (like a small supermarket)
opening_hours Mo-Fr 09:00-16:00 Shop is open Monday till Friday from 09:00am until 04:00pm local time.
building yes Because the way should represent a building's outline
naturism no Nude shopping is not allowed. Note that this has priority over the tagging of the whole site because the shop's area lies inside the area of the whole site (is contained area within other area).

Tagging of objects on site

Kind of object Style in example image Tagging
Playground Yellow area leisure=playground, surface=sand
Caravan area Striped area caravans=yes, capacity:caravans=30 (if known that 30 spaces are existing)
Tent area Checkerboard area tents=yes, capacity:tents=45 (if known that 45 spaces are existing)
Lake Blue area natural=water, name=Example Loch, sport=swimming (consider putting sport=swimming on a node of the lake if this is the only accessible spot)
Waste disposal Icon W amenity=waste_disposal, waste=chemical_toilet;household
Toilet Icon T amenity=toilets, unisex=yes, diaper=yes, wheelchair=limited
Shower with hot water available Icon S shower=hot

To be tagged on relation

Key Value Description
type site It is a site consisting of multiple objects
site camp_site It is a camping related site
name Lakeside Same as on polygon
