Living streets — compared to residential streets (highway=residential) — have special regulations like lower speed limits, special parking restrictions, special traffic rules, ...

There are many such "living streets" in Germany ("Verkehrsberuhigter Bereich") and similar concepts seem to apply elsewhere. Simply tagging them with something like highway=residential, maxspeed=7, motorcar=yes, motorcycle=yes, bicycle=yes, ... still loses information and is annoying to do on areas that have lots of such streets. Renderers might want to render living_streets differently than residential streets, or show them at different zoomlevels than residential ones.

Routing and navigation software might try to avoid such areas when navigating cars.

How to Map

ElementWay.png

To map living streets nothing else than a simple way is required. Add the highway=living_street tag to it and name the street with name=

The tag maxspeed is implicit according to the rules of the country (like it's already done for highway=motorway and alike).
For example, you do not need to add a maxspeed=7 tag for a German living street.

Rendering

Like a residential street, but filled with light grey.

Remarks

Tempo-30-Zone (Germany)

Please note: a "Tempo-30-Zone" — where the main special regulation is the 30km/h speed limit itself — is NOT a living street. These streets should be tagged with highway=residential, maxspeed=30.

Spielstraße (Germany)

In common language many people name as "Spielstraße" what is named "Verkehrsberuhigter Bereich" by law (Straßenverkehrsordnung StVO). The term "Spielstraße" is not used in the StVO, but can be found in additional regulations (Verwaltungsvorschriften). It names a rarely used combination of a common exclusion of every traffic (Verbot für Fahrzeuge aller Art, the common red circle, white center), combined with a small symbol below for playing children [7].

The max. speed of 7 km/h for "Schrittgeschwindigkeit" ist not named within the StVO, but resulted from different judgements, most within the range of 7 up to 12 km/h. It may be even as low as 4 km/h, while all are significantly below 20 km/h.
