Access to all persons regardless of sex or gender.
Usage
Use this tag in combination with other tags, most frequently in combination with amenity=toilets. Do not forget to also add gender_segregated=* to allow for proper understanding of it! (see #Historical skunking below for details why).
Example:
amenity=toiletsunisex=yesgender_segregated=no
Historical skunking
unisex=yes was likely originally intended to mean a gender-neutral facility, as that is commonly understood meaning of term
unisex.
However, for a long time, unisex=yes was incorrectly used by iD (and JOSM) to also mean male=yes + female=yes, due to problematic UI (which didn't allow for specifying both at once).
Thus, due to those historical incidents, this tag has unfortunately become skunked, and can no longer be unambiguously used on its own, without a companion tag gender_segregated=*.
So, to clear ambiguousness and allow for proper parsing of this tag, please note:
- gender-neutral facility (e.g.
amenity=toilets) should be tagged with bothunisex=yes+gender_segregated=no
otherwise:
- Gender segregated facilities (e.g.
amenity=toilets) should be taggedfemale=yes+male=yes+gender_segregated=yes.
