A 
City gate (or town gate) is a gate which is or was set in a city wall.
May also be used for gate towers.
Similar to gatehouse, but that are or were functioning as part of a city wall, are tagged with this key value.
How to map
Set a node at the center of the gate or draw an area along its outline.
Tag it with historic=city_gate.
Tags used in combination
name=*the name of the city gatewikipedia=*start_date=*year of completion
Additional features
If a road/path runs underneath the city gate, tag it withhighway=* + tunnel=building_passage. The node on the road where the barrier is located can be tagged :
- if it is permanently open:
barrier=entrance - if it is an active barrier:
barrier=*(eg.barrier=gate;barrier=sally_port;barrier=portcullis... ) +access=*.
