Mobile-first web editor for the tags of OSM objects, explaining every tag from the OSM wiki | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
DinoData is a web-based tag editor for OpenStreetMap nodes, ways and relations, designed for phones first. Open an object, see what it is and what each tag means in your language, edit the tags with inputs suited to them, and save as a changeset. Geometry is not edited.
DinoData runs entirely in the browser and is hosted on Wikimedia Toolforge. It started as a Wikidata editor; the OpenStreetMap mode lives next to it in the same app (see below).
Use
Open https://dinodata.toolforge.org/#osm and search for a place, or open an object directly, e.g. #osm/way/123. The search box accepts:
- openstreetmap.org URLs, including edit and API URLs, iD and JOSM remote control links
- short IDs like
n123,w123,way 123 - coordinates, listing the tagged objects at that point
- any other text, as a place search with Photon while typing and Nominatim on Enter
“Near me” lists the tagged objects around your location (via the Overpass API), handy while surveying. Recently opened objects are listed on the start page.
Understanding the tags
- What the object is (“Cafe”), with icon, from the presets of the iD tagging schema, translated; tap to change the type
- Every tag explained from the Data items of this wiki: description in your language, status, image, link to the wiki page and to the Wikidata concept
- Deprecated and discouraged tags are marked
- A small static map of the location, and the ways and relations the object is part of
- History of the object: added, changed and removed tags per version, with user, changeset comment and editor; versions that changed the geometry are marked
Editing
- Fields of the preset with matching inputs:
- yes/no and other choices as large chips instead of dropdowns
- a value picker with the translated options of the preset and the most used values from taginfo
- chips for multiple values, e.g.
cuisine=pizza;pasta, and toggles for keys likediet:* - names per language, address, access
- a search for
wikidata=*and similar fields, showing the label of the item - number, phone and URL keyboards on phones
- Issues with one-tap fixes: deprecated tags (from the iD tagging schema and the wiki), values not matching the format documented on the wiki, tags not meant for the element type, incompatible tags
- Add fields or tags, with key suggestions from taginfo, or by typing
key=value - Undo per field or tag; pending edits survive reloads and the login
Text view, copy and paste
- A text view for power users shows all tags as
key=valuelines or as Level0 text (with coordinates, way nodes and relation members, which are not edited here) - Copy single tags, all tags or the changes; paste with Ctrl+V anywhere on the page, or with the “Paste tags” button, undoable from the confirmation
- Pasting accepts
key=valuelines, tab-separated lines and"key"="value"as copied from taginfo or Overpass turbo;key=removes the tag - Level0 text from the Level0 editor can be pasted as is: the tags of the opened object are taken, references and comments are skipped. Copied Level0 text contains the full object, so it can be pasted into Level0.
- Links to open the object on openstreetmap.org, in iD and in Level0
Saving
- Log in with your OpenStreetMap account (OAuth 2.0 in a popup, so pending edits are kept)
- Review the changes, enter a changeset comment and choose the source (survey, local knowledge, website, aerial imagery)
- Each save is one changeset, tagged with
created_by=DinoDataandlocale - If someone edited the object meanwhile, the tags are merged; only keys changed on both sides need a choice
Limitations
- No geometry editing, no creating or deleting objects, no editing of relation members
- One object per changeset
- No offline editing
- The user interface of the OpenStreetMap mode is available in English, German and Dutch
Data sources
- OpenStreetMap API: objects, history, parent ways and relations, saving
- This wiki's Wikibase: tag documentation (Data items)
- iD tagging schema: presets, fields, translations, deprecated tags
- taginfo: common values and key suggestions
- Nominatim, Photon and the Overpass API: search and nearby objects
Wikidata
DinoData's other mode is a compact viewer and editor for Wikidata items (and structured data on Wikimedia Commons). From the OpenStreetMap mode, wikidata=* values and the Wikidata concepts of tags open the linked item in DinoData. See Wikidata:DinoData.
