Specifies the type of cycleway=*
on a per-lane basis.
Most highway adjacent bicycle infrastructure is built by having the cycleway near the edge. For this reason, cycleway=*
in combination with *:left=*
, *:both=*
and *:right=*
almost always refers to bicycle infrastructure near the edges. There are cases where this simple tagging style doesn't work, though: Some bicycle lanes are located between two motor lanes which is particularly common at turn lanes which renders cycleway=*
even with a direction prefix insufficient.
For this reason, a newer tagging has been emerged with the *:lanes=*
suffix: cycleway:lanes=*
.
Keep in mind that for backwards compatibility and simpler tagging style, cycleway:left/both/right=*
is still the preferred method of tagging most cycle lanes and are still in use for e.g. cycle tracks (both as separate way and as part of a highway) which are located outside of the corresponding carriageway (and thus aren't lanes at all) and sharrows which are defined by the lack of cycle lanes.
