Proposal
A residential equivalent to shop=mall and man_made=works to represent a single functioning residential feature in complex cases, working alongisde landuse=residential.
Rationale
landuse=* is a homogeneous statistical classification "paint". landuse=* + name=* is a workaround for the lack of features compared to commercial and industrial features. Some users prefer to use landuse=residential for broader areas. In particular, drawing landuse=residential for each home has been debated, while it's not exactly place=plot / boundary=lot when it corresponds to the exactly area physically delineated or used.
In the status quo, for simplicity, usability, and compatibility, I would like to keep landuse=residential for entire estates, mostly for residential=apartments complexes. I don't want to draw nested landuse=residential inside for different parts of estates.
There are estates with both apartment and houses. residential=apartments doesn't fit them entirely.
Tagging
residence=*: Can corresponds to mostresidential=*values, but new features are proposedresidence=estateestate=*- [TBD]
