Proposal talk:Deprecate man made=drinking fountain

I am against this because it leads to a potential tagging gap where people will claim that fountain=nasone with amenity=drinking_water is not sufficient to tell something where you can drink water from is indeed a kind of drinking fountain, because they might not understand the specific, well documented and significantly used fountain value, and then they’ll say we have to use fountain=drinking and retag the nasone value in a subtag, ending up with 3 tags, redefining 2 tags, and not having gained anything. And this in ignorance of what people are actually interested—Dieterdreist (talk) 13:06, 11 October 2022 (UTC)

I am not fan of fountain=nasone (I would tag specific styles in a separate tag to avoid having hundreds of values in fountain=*) but it states that it is kind of drinking fountain Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:10, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
My proposal to deprecate fountain=nasone is unrelated to this one. Anyway I don't understand what you're talking about since only 52 man_made=drinking_fountain are tagged with fountain=* and most of those are fountain=bubbler. Nowhere is documented that fountain=* is a subtag of man_made=drinking_fountain. There is not one single object tagged as man_made=drinking_fountain and fountain=nasone. --Davidoskky (talk) 14:41, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
  • Support. Generally speaking, man_made=* sounds horrible and tells you almost nothing about the feature. I would support deprecating any or all of it and finding a way to work this into something more useful and semantic, which it sounds like is already available with fountain=*. Going to guess that 99% of things mapped are man (or woman) made. I would prefer the proposal included a route forward for upgrading the tags automatically. But good starting point. "rarely used tag"?

As my clarifying edit was reverted, what is the threshold for "rarely used" in this context? What about 200 instances tagged? 40? 10? Should they all be called the same amounts? How many would have to tagged in order to be "moderately" used? Currently this tag is used 650 times--Dieterdreist (talk) 10:03, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Changed to "It is also not in widespread use." - as it is easier to confirm and conveys info that it is not an attempt to say rename highway=unclassified Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:24, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
