limits

Is it supposed to be for any place where sunbathing is accepted/legal or only designated ones? For example in Poland nearly entire seashore is both suitable for sunbathing and it is an accepted there. It would be pointless to have all of it tagged with a new feature. Mateusz Konieczny (talk) 14:17, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

  1. It's definitely for the designated locations (like in the 1st example).
  2. For the other ones consider if some places could be more suitable, popular or simply good for sunbathing, as contrasted with the rest where sunbathing is still accepted/legal. The later case is obviously quite subjective, while somewhat similar to the tourism=viewpoint --Vɑdɪm (talk) 15:57, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
  • But, _are_ there any designated sunbathing areas that aren't simultaneously something else that is already mapped and more descriptive? Such as a park, beach or swimming pitch? The examples listed on the proposal certainly aren't convincing, they just seem to be rectangles inside or next to one of those features where people would logically sunbathe, but could as well be positioned anywhere else. --Taktaal (talk) 14:35, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Optional sunbathing=*

Martin at the tagging mail list suggested of some similarity with the nudism=* key.

The difference with the nudism=* key though is that leisure=sunbathing is supposed for tagging of a self-sufficient area which may be a part of some larger area like a beach or a leisure=beach_resort or it may be completely "stand-alone" area, dissociated of any hierarchy.

Nevertheless, perhaps someone could find useful to add an optional key sunbathing=* to give some more details of a sunbathing place:

sunbathing=*
value description
designated designated for sunbathing by authorities or a property owner
customary popular place for sunbathing
no prohibited, asking for trouble, or unsuitable, for example due to the natural properties of a place
yes optional, not really useful, mere leisure=sunbathing is enough

How is about this one? --Vɑdɪm (talk) 11:10, 8 September 2019 (UTC)

It makes sense as long as beaches are not tagged sunbathing=customary as said previously.

Designated only

Considering the responses it may be better to give a more definite criteria for using this tag.

In this regard the definition of leisure=sunbathing as *any* popular place suitable for sunbathing looks rather vague. It could be more easily also used as a trolltag.

So, how is about using leisure=sunbathing only for designated locations? This also would allow to simplify tagging by avoiding optional sunbathing=* proposed earlier.

I've amended the proposal accordingly.--Vɑdɪm (talk) 09:25, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, it makes sense --Nospam2005 (talk) 18:28, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
Good idea. Can you find some photographs that show examples of designated sunbathing locations? Are there signs that specify this? --Jeisenbe (talk) 00:53, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Here are some:
I've added them to the Examples section as well--Vɑdɪm (talk) 11:30, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Kensington Meadows in Bath is well known for that according to the authorities: The Gardens are particularly popular for sunbathing but I couldn't find a sign on photos (I'm not living close too either). BTW, can we consider a meadow well known for that as designated?
I'd rather not. Otherwise as pointed out earlier it could be prone falling into a rather grey area -- much more difficult to verify--Vɑdɪm (talk) 11:30, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
Agreed, it was just a way to check that we agree. For your last picture, that's IMHO just a beach, maybe with access=private. --Nospam2005 (talk) 16:17, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
At the last picture there are 2 different bathing establishments (stabilimenti balneari in Italy), i.e. leisure=beach_resort, maybe with access=customers. One at the foreground also has a bar, probably some sanitary facilities, etc. It looks like the area populated by parasoles+amenity=loungers is dedicated for sunbathing. --Vɑdɪm (talk) 12:09, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
I could find a nude sunbathing allowed sign and a no nude sunbathing sign. But no "sunbathing sign" --Nospam2005 (talk) 07:44, 9 October 2019 (UTC)
I think that's correct: "sunbathing signs" if any are rare, but you'd judge from some other indications, like in the pictures above --Vɑdɪm (talk) 11:30, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Any more comments or we just moving for a vote? --Vɑdɪm (talk) 15:52, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Pre-vote

Tagging changed to leisure=sunbathing_area as discussed at http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/Feature-Proposal-RFC-sunbathing-tp5947026p5949827.html

Other Sunbathing areas than beaches

Is this for sunbathing areas like these wooden loungers, which stand often in mountainous areas and are often called "Sonnentankstelle" in German, which is solar filling station?

The best I could find that roughly matches your description is something like https://www.flickr.com/photos/barbara-walzer/5498105108/ . If that's the case then I'd say it's rather not about sunbathing, as the later would assume more parts of the body exposed. I think the photo had captured something which is called sometimes as air bathing --Vɑdɪm (talk) 10:57, 3 November 2019 (UTC)
