Model Aerodrome
Proposal status: Abandoned (inactive)
Proposed by: Vanagaudi
Tagging: sport=model_aerodrome
Applies to: node/area
Definition: air field for model airplanes, well-known or with legal allowance
Statistics:

Rendered as: area same as playground plus icon, node as icon
Draft started:
Proposed on: 2007-11-04
RFC start: 2008-01-04

Rationale

Aerodromes for model airplanes are often hidden in urban places far away from residential buildings. Those places consists out of grass, place for model airplane preparing, and a safety fence for spectators. Model plane aerodromes should be fenced to visitors accessing the air field. To find such aerodromes it might be a good idea to set a pictogram on the map.

The model aerodrome tag should only be set for official or well organized places, or such with legal permissions (esp. for engined model airplanes). There are some well-known places for remote controlled model gliders which should be included.

Tag Description

This tag is intended for areas or single nodes.

Rendering

The pictogram could show top half of a person with a radiating antenna in his hands in foreground, and a flying plane in background. Name and operator tag isn't important and should be rendered only on highest map resolution.

Opinion

Do you have another idea or some improvements?

  • I think the sport= tag is one of those that should be filled up with specific values for any sport there is out there just as the meaning is reasonably clear internationally (i.e. a really bad example being sport=football). And as 'sports' in the strictest sense merges into pastimes/hobbies, the easiest thing is to include them too. So, this proposal meets the criteria and I support it. • The only real question is "Is it a sport". This is one of those classification problems that needs a fundamental tidy up. If model_aerodrome is a 'sport' then what about model_boating and model_railway. Both of which probably have more dedicated sites than model_aerodrome. leisure or amenity would seem to be a more appropriate tag - probably leisure since that already has golf_course and fishing ( although that probably should now be sport ). Looking at this logically, several activities may well be carried out at a location, so a list of sport tags would be added to a leisure complex or country club which has a golf_course, tennis courts, 'football' pitch etc. and often these sites also have facilities for modelling activities as well. What I am probably saying is that sport or activity should be secondary tags to the leisure or amenity although amenity=leisure / activity=model_airplane seems much more logical Lsces 06:45, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
  • There's a lot more skill involved in flying a radio-controlled 'plane (especially a full function helicpoter) than booting a plastic ball about :) Seriously though, some RC flying is competitive and could be labelled as a sport, but most is a leisure activity. The labelling of the activity at the location is most important, so sport or leisure seem equally fine to me. Chillly 12:06, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
    • both lsces and chilly bring up good points - i think we could class most sports as leisure activities also. maybe we need to change the lot to leisure=sport sport=soccer|rugby league|RC planes|golf|archery|etc...? Myfanwy 18:50, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
      • From Wiki Definition: "Sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports and motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality are major factors." This way leisure is a non-compatitive, and sport an compatitive activity. I agree that flying model airplanes is a leisure activity most times without competition. In general "leisure" defines the place of activity during people's spare time (see leisure definition) and the tag should be leisure=RC_planes. Vanagaudi 14:04, 07 February 2008 (UTC)
        • I like …=model_aerodrome better than …=RC_planes or …=model_airplane. That way, we include model helicopters. --Rayx 14:29, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • I like leisure=model_aerodrome but I think aeroway=model_aerodrome is better, cause this hobby is in Germany regulated under the same laws like the big aerodromes. Can you believe this? That's true. And the second reason is, that we'll need more special tags for this hobby, and there'll be easier to realized under aeroway as a special group for all aero activities. There are a lot of things and features more to tag, examples: different starting options for gliders, permissons for maxweight, engined models, rockets (yes, flying model_rockets is a real hobby), also winches for gliders. The runways like the other model aeroways should have their own tags, cause they are different to big runways and software should have the possibility to recognize this differences. And I know, some model aerodromes are certified (ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EC-regulation 761/2001), maybe this is worth to tag.--René Falk 18:46, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
  • According to a discussion in the talk.de-ML this proposal should be revitalized. Open issues I see:
    • which categorie: leisure, sports, aeroway, ...
    • is model_aerodrome the area including the buildings (e.g. a hut for equipment and car parkings, etc.)? What about the tagging for the runway => aeroway = model_runway ?
    • ...

Please comment. --MichaelK 23:10, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

  • I'm in favour of René's suggestion to use tags similar to those of the "real" aerodromes. I'd also like to draw and tag the model aeroplanes' runways in this manner. It could be either aeroway=model_runway or a combination of aeroway=runway and leisure=model (or something like that). --Mikalaari 17:34, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
    • Tag scheme should be similar, but not the same as regular aerodromes. You probably wouldn't want a model airfield to show up in a flight simulator. aeroway=model_* works better than aeroway=runway leisure=model_aerodrome when you're searching for things (or trying to do a quick extract using [XAPI] or somesuch). aeroway=model_aerodrome follows the same line of thought, and solves the "is it a sport" problem. --Tinshack 16:51, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
  • I also have some doubt about putting model_aerodrome in "sport". Usually sport is about the kind of sports in combination with leisure, which is about the place (pitch, swimming_pool, track, ...). Therefor I support leisure=model_aerodrome maybe in combination with sport=model_aviation (or similar). --Dieterdreist 15:46, 19 October 2011 (BST)
  • Agreed it should be leisure= rather than sport= ; also agreed it should be :model_aerodrome rather than :rc_airdraft or such - we should be as generic as we can, yet as unambiguous too - a difficult compromise! I do not agree with René Falk: German law can say whatever it says, we are not working for Germany only. But above all: something needs to be done about this matter, time and again one sees these model airfields being mapped as real airports and that is really not what we want. Until a better solution turns up, I will apply "leisure=model_aerodrome" as a non-official tag. ~~~~
